General Information:

The Computer Science (CS) Department seeks a highly motivated individual to join us as an undergraduate academic advisor. We offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and Information Technology. The department values a well-connected student community prioritizing students both academically and holistically. Advisors hold in-person meetings with students proactively communicate with students online offer advising and community building events and develop resources to foster student success. This is a full-time 12-month Administrative and Professional Faculty position.

JMUs CS department strives to provide a broad accessible and rigorous education to our diverse student body. With small class sizes and emphasis on state-of-the-art pedagogy we train our graduates to program fluently think deeply about computational problems communicate clearly responsibly practice their craft and achieve professional success. We foster a sense of shared community with our students giving them opportunities for leadership through robust TA and student ambassador programs conducting research with faculty and assisting with faculty searches.

The CS department maintains a collegial work environment and a strong sense of shared mission. We value the success of our colleagues and pitch in to help each other when needed. We arrive at decisions collaboratively while encouraging and attending to minority opinions.

We recognize and value a broad spectrum of scholarship and service activities. This ranges from conference and journal publications to conducting research in pedagogy developing software or hardware artifacts community engagement through computing events and leadership roles inside and outside the university.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide academic advising to assigned Computer Science majors and minors including monitoring academic progress communicating regularly with advisees and connecting advisees with campus resources and opportunities.
2. Help advisees develop academic plans based on their interests and goals providing guidance on curricular requirements and academic opportunities.
3. Create and maintain print and web-based advising resources for students and colleagues.
4. Organize advising events targeted toward student needs at particular stages such as applying to the major preparing for upper-level coursework and planning for graduation.
5. Support students experiencing difficulties by helping them identify and access academic and campus resources.
6. Collaborate with other offices across campus to support the advising mission of the department.
7. Serve as a liaison for the Virginia Tech 41 Computer Science Masters degree program.
8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required
Bachelors degree.
Excellent oral and written communication using a variety of technology platforms.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate meaningfully with undergraduates.
Effective time management organizational and problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail combined with the ability to see the big picture.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred
Academic advising or comparable higher education experience working directly with undergraduates.
Familiarity with national trends and best practices in academic advising and higher education.
Experience managing and analyzing data.
Experience managing and using technical systems such as Salesforce CRM PeopleSoft and Canvas LMS.
