Position:Painter J3-J4
Job Location: Norfolk VA
Hutco Branch: Portsmouth VA
Rate of Pay:$25 per hour
Shifts Available:
- Day Shift:6:00 AM 2:45 PM
- Second Shift:3:00 PM 11:00 PM

Position Summary
We are seeking Marine Painters J3J4 to support our Coating Department with surface prep painting and coating operations aboard ships. This role requires familiarity with military-grade coatings and the ability to perform tasks in accordance with NAVSEA 009-32 standards.
Journeyperson Guidelines
Journeyperson 4 (J4)
- Meets all Journeyperson 3 criteria
- Sets up jobs and spraying equipment
- Proficient in measuring/recording DFT and environmental readings
- Leads small work groups
- Troubleshoots equipment and ensures job progress
- Proficient in NAVSEA 009-32 compliance
Journeyperson 3 (J3)
- Meets all Journeyperson 2 criteria
- Knowledgeable in mixing/applying epoxy and enamel paints
- Able to complete jobs without direct supervision
- Capable of interpreting job specifications and applying coatings accordingly
- Understands NAVSEA 009-32 requirements
Journeyperson 2
- Meets all Journeyperson 1 criteria
- Operates power tools for surface prep and paint removal
- Familiar with SSPC standards: SP-1 SP-2 SP-3 SP-5 SP-6 SP-10 SP-11 SP-12
- Understands safety data sheets (SDS) and product specs (NAVSEA 718)
- Has knowledge of critical vs. non-critical coated systems
- May hold two or more SSPC certifications: C7 C12 C13 or C14
Journeyperson 1
- SSPC certified in one of the following: C7 C12 C13 or C14 OR Coast Guard certified in pumping
- Understands tool maintenance and basic housekeeping
- Capable of performing job tasks safely and effectively
- Some knowledge of power tool cleaning or gas-free procedures
Requirements
- Ability to work in confined spaces and aboard vessels
- Comfortable with heights ladders and ship navigation
- Attention to detail and ability to follow strict specifications
- Familiarity with marine preservation standards (NAVSEA)
