Job Description

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. What are we looking for

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree in economics data science statistics mathematics or other related fields.

Experience working in the economic analysis economic development or the tourism industry is a plus.

A combination of education superior academic performance or other types of work experience may be considered for eligibility.

Competencies:

Knowledge of

  • Data structures and the principles of data management.
  • The economic principles and mechanisms with regard to the tourism industry.
  • The geographic landscape of Montana.
  • Business intelligence tools (Tableau Power BI DOMO etc.).
  • Management of quantitative and qualitative research projects

Ability to

  • Effectively use data-related software applications (Excel R package Python SQL etc.).
  • Analyze data and provide practical applications of results.
  • Perform statistical analysis across multiple data sources.
  • Communicate effectively within a team and across different mediums.
  • Work independently demonstrated success in taking initiative organizing steps associated with complex projects and successfully completing those steps in a timely manner.

This position allows for a hybrid work schedule from a remote location within the State of Montana. Weekly travel to Helena offices will be required. Research and Information Services (RIS)

The Research and Information Services (RIS) Bureau within the Montana Department of Commerce partners with people agencies and organizations throughout the state nation and globe to promote economic opportunity and enhance our understanding of the people and economy of the State of Montana. RIS is comprised of three components: The Census and Economic Information Center the Tourism Research Program and the Industry Development Program. You can learn more about ushere.

Job Overview

The Tourism Data Manager primarily works with the marketing team at the Montana Department of Commerce to maximize the teams efficiency and effectiveness in the competitive destination marketing landscape. This position oversees data partnerships coordinates projects that involve outside research and data agencies and performs data analysis focused on marketing strategies and the economic impacts of visitation to Montana. The analysis conducted in this role utilizes a variety of unique and exciting data sources such as ITRRs Montana nonresident travel data and reports aggregated mobile device location and movement aggregated card spending hotel and short-term lodging performance and others.

Typical duties include:

Managing and transforming data from owned and purchased data sources.

Presenting and visualizing data in a consumable format (ex. reports presentations interactive data displays etc.).

Identifying gaps and weaknesses in marketing program strategy data sources planning and execution.

Setting baseline metrics and developing methods for measuring impact of marketing programs and economic development programs related to tourism (e.g. grant programs).

Providing recommendations that support and inform marketing strategy and planning processes.

Project management

The audience for these products includes Department of Commerce leadership and staff the Departments agencies-of-record marketing and research partners across Montana and the public.

Other duties may include assisting RIS with economic and demographic analysis as needed.
