Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is currently hiring a Behavioral Specialist. The Behavioral Specialist reports to the Behavior Analytic Administrator and provides continuous behavioral support within the BAJCC. This support may include providing in-situ coaching to classroom and unit staff utilizing behavioral interventions and strategies to effect behavioral change. The Behavior Specialist may also assist in the creation and delivery of professional development training for staff and collect data related to outcome measures guided by the Behavior Analytic Administrator and Director of Behavior Analysis. The Behavior Specialist will comply with Federal State and Agency policies.

Per the needs of the facility occasional evening weekend and holiday coverage may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the functions of behavior and basic behavior change strategies.
  • Knowledge of intellectual disabilities and mental health disorders.
  • Knowledge of functional behavior assessment procedures behavior intervention plan implementation and fidelity monitoring
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and its implementation.
  • Ability to support teams in the development and consistent application of behavior management techniques interventions and strategies while utilizing data collected in-situ to guide decision-making.
  • Competent in developing materials to collect and provide initial analysis of a variety of data to support planning and intervention.
  • Ability to help facilitate workshops trainings and presentations for the purpose of developing staff behavior management skills use of PBIS within the BAJCC.
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with staff and residents.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with residents parents colleagues and other professionals.
  • Able to work evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge/experience with computer technology as it relates to data collection and report writing.
  • Receptive to ongoing professional development and direct performance feedback; self-detects limits and requests assistance.
  • Utilizes and participates in departmental as well as agency expectations and protocols.
  • Consistent and predictable and time management to complete assigned work tasks.
  • Ability to meet the DHRM Physical Demands established.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable knowledge supporting behavioral intervention services or programs in a secure care setting (e.g. residential psychiatric facility intensive behavioral unit juvenile justice facility) or alternative educational setting.
  • Experience within public school settings.
