Senior IT Assistant

Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Senior IT Assistant will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Officer and the technical supervision of an IT Officer at Sub/Branch/Multi-Country office level. The incumbent may play a supervisory role in overlooking the day-to-day activities of the Telecom Operators in the offices in the area of coverage. S/he has working relationships with UNHCR staff members in the office and other offices within the country of assignment as well as with staff of UN agencies and other UNHCR partners within the area of responsibility (AOR) to exchange information and to provide assistance.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter UN Staff Regulations and Rules UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. In addition staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core functional cross-functional and managerial competencies and UNHCRs core values of professionalism integrity and respect for diversity.


Duties
- Assist the office in implementing set standards for applications that meets the needs of the users and supports the overall Information and Communication Technology.
- Monitor and maintain the LAN Network Servers Routers Printers LAN Points Switches Patch panels Access points HF and VHF bases HF and VHF relay stations Satellite Modem to prevent faults occurring.
- Carry out missions for new installations and routine maintenance tours of ICT equipment.
- Ensure that ICT problem recovery is done as quickly as possible and make regular system back-ups.
- Assist with the installation of the software packages basic repair/maintenance of computer hardware HF and VHF equipment.
- Train UNHCR staff on email system utilization of VHF handhelds telephone system.
- Add and remove users from the Networks.
- Maintain the inventory of ICT equipment and keep track of movements of ICT equipment.
- Draft mails and memoranda on ICT matters.
- Assist in the drafting of technical documentation on radio equipment operating procedures
- Certify invoices and delivery notes and pass for payment.
- Evaluate needs for upgrading and eventually replacing ICT equipment in the field to meet with UNHCR standards.
- Select the most efficient and economic means for the transmission of messages taking into consideration the nature and priority of communications to be transmitted.
- Carry out administrative duties within the area of competence as assigned.
- To decide on appropriate resolution to incidents.
- Escalating incidents where they cannot be resolved at the office level.

- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
- Perform other related duties as required.

Desired Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will bring proven experience in IT user support hardware/software troubleshooting and network operations preferably within a UNHCR environment.

The incumbent must demonstrate initiative client orientation and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multifunctional team. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 cloud-based services remote support tools and basic IT security practices is required.

Strong organizational skills discretion and a solution-focused approach are essential. The candidate should be able to support users at various technical levels including colleagues from other UN agencies hosted in UNHCR premises.

Native-level fluency in Greek and professional proficiency in English are required.

Currently some 142000 asylum-seekers and refugees are hosted in Greece. In 2024 some 62000 people arrived either by sea or land. UNHCR provides expert advice to the State and evidence-based information that helps inform programmes and policies for asylum-seekers and refugees. Access to international protection identifying durable solutions and support to vulnerable asylum-seekers and refugees such as unaccompanied children and survivors of gender-based violence are UNHCRs key also works with national and local authorities the private sector civil society and refugee communities to advance protection solutions and inclusion develop support networks and create employability and training opportunities for refugees. The Office retains a readiness to respond to emergencies and new arrivals with a focus on immediate support to the most vulnerable. UNHCR Greece plays a strong advocacy role since continued support is needed particularly from EU countries and EU institutions in providing immediate protection to those most at-risk through sufficient resources ensuring capacity in the country and responsibility-sharing. UNHCR will continue to assist Greek authorities in responding to both short and long-term challenges.

This position is being established as part of the structural adjustment of the Greece operation and its IT function in response to the discontinuation of IT roles at both the Country Office and field locations shaped by the impact of the global funding crisis on the organization. It consolidates IT support into a single G5-level Senior IT Assistant position based at the Country Office in Athens with responsibility for covering the entire operational area.

This realignment reflects a smaller client base increased reliance on cloud-based and automated systems and a higher level of digital proficiency among users who are now expected to perform basic troubleshooting and independently access digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams. The position also provides limited on-site support to other UN entities that may be co-located with UNHCR.

The incumbent will serve as the sole IT support staff in the operation and must be able to work independently manage competing priorities and contribute actively as part of multifunctional teams. Responsibilities include end-user support maintenance of hardware and software network monitoring and coordination with remote IT hubs or regional ICT teams when needed.

The position may be supervised by a senior officer admin colleague or another designated staff member depending on office structure.

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens is a family duty station classified as H by ICSC. Public Transportation and medical facilities are well-developed and easily accessible. The educational institutions at all levels as well as international schools are available. The climate can be described as Mediterranean with hot and dry summers and cool and mild winters.

In accordance with UNDSS security risk assessment the whole Greek operation is classified as Security Level 2 (low). Security Clearance is required for travelling in the country.
