Position Summary:
Intensive Behavior programs provide services to school age children with emotional and /or behavioral needs that adversely affect their education performance; these services may include youth deemed to be delinquent. Under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or administrator provides support services in classrooms resource centers or other program related areas. The assistant directs involvement in the instructional program for assigned students and their identified needs. Duties and responsibilities depend on class/program assignments.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Follow the direction of the teacher team leader or supervisor in a cooperative manner
- Learn techniques procedures and routines quickly and competently
- Elicit specific behaviors from children as indicated by the instructional program
- Develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with students families volunteers other staff members and the general public according to program design
- Assist the teacher team leader or supervisor in working with children either individually or in groups
- Assist in all phases of the daily operations of the program
- Assist in maintaining the students life skills such as dressing hygiene and toileting students
- Assist with the integration of children into a variety of settings
- Assist with appropriate assessments of students
- Assist with implementing individualized educational plans such as IEP
- Prepare instructional materials and operate instructional equipment
- Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher
- Record student progress and /or other records as requested
- Manage student behavior across setting using consistent and positive intervention strategies
- Maintain a neat and orderly environment
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers
- Communicate regularly and appropriately through the use of email
- Respect and maintain confidential information in all situations
- Fulfill other related duties as assigned
- Exhibit regular attendance as demonstrated by not more than an average of one day per month absent unless on a protected statutory leave
- Be punctual and present for all required duties
Specific Job Capabilities:
- Develop positive relationships with students engage in positive interactions and promote social skills in children
- Follow recommended conflict resolution strategies and safety techniques
- Demonstrate ability to de-escalate/manage/respond to physically and emotionally aggressive behaviors using appropriate safety measures
- Make non-emotional decisions during conflict resolution
- Implement behavior support plans throughout the students school day
- Collect appropriate data and documentation and present to students interdisciplinary team
- Complete incident reports when needed
- Ability to make logical and practical decisions ensuring health and safety of school staff and students
- Serve as a team member in brainstorming behavior intervention strategies as student needs change
Minimum Qualifications:
- There is a minimum requirement of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two years experience or previous training with children in a similar program required.
- The assistant must be able to work independently with minimum direction.
- The employee must possess good organizational skills and good command of the English language.
- Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed and a genuine interest in and ability to relate to students is expected.
- Ability to perform significant reaching bending stooping crouching and lifting 50 pounds is expected.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and consistent attendance is required.
- Applicants must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities and/or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to equity and strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
- Ability to move rapidly to intervene in situations where a students safety is being jeopardized.
Qualifications specific to personnel working in intensive behavior programs:
- Must have the ability to use de-escalation strategies with children including physical restraint where appropriate.
- Must have the ability to remain calm and make non-emotional decisions in trying circumstances.
- Must have training in Collaborative Problem Solving and Crisis Prevention including safety techniques or willing to be trained upon hiring.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to: talk hear walk frequently sit stand stoop kneel crouch crawl use hand dexterity for computer work handle items reach with hand and arms lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds and see close and at a distance have peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Workloads are heavy and timelines may be unreasonably short at times. Requests and issues are often received which require immediate attention and conflict with other priorities.
