Job Description

The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of International Student Affairs and assists in the administration of the International Student Affairs office supporting the DePauw international community. Working collaboratively with the Director of International Student Affairs and colleagues at DePauw the Assistant Director plans and implements programs that support international students well-being belonging inclusion and success on campus. The Assistant Director as a DSO (Designated School Official) assists in maintaining student immigration records advising students on immigration regulations and concerns and supporting students as they pursue opportunities in the US that entail additional immigration-related paperwork such as CPT OPT and on-campus employment. In addition the Assistant Director assists in providing tailored sociocultural and academic support to students through one-on-one meetings helping to ensure that every international student on campus receives the necessary support to thrive in their undergraduate studies and beyond.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

Immigration Advising and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO)

  • Advises international students on immigration regulations policies and procedures

  • Updates SEVIS database with current student information

  • Interacts with all relevant governmental agencies as needed including but not limited to SEVP USCIS ICE CBP SSA IRS

  • Assists with CPT and OPT work authorizations

  • Plans and executes workshops for students on CPT OPT and Tax

  • Stays current with immigration/regulatory updates as well as developments in international education

  • Assists in documentation management of immigration and other essential records through Terra Dotta Software Box and other filing systems

Administration supervision and interdepartmental collaboration:

  • Assists in planning and executing the International Student Orientation

  • Selects international student ambassadors (including Lead Ambassadors) through a competitive application and interview process in collaboration with prior years Lead Ambassadors and the Director

  • Trains international student ambassadors with Lead Ambassadors and the Director

  • Collaborates across departments to ensure there is equitable campus-wide support for international students and to promote an understanding of the international student experience

  • Assists in the review of institutional and departmental policies and procedures to ensure compatibility with immigration regulations

  • Serves on campus-wide committees as needed

  • Works with colleagues in other departments (CARE EAP Housing etc.) to support students in crisis

  • Serves as a liaison and advocate with faculty/staff regarding student needs

  • Supports the Director in the implementation of strategic planning including updating and improving immigration-related policies and procedures

  • Assists in data collection and program reports.

Other International Student Support

  • Oversees the Hoosier Hospitality Program and Global Partners Program

  • Works with the Director to develop plan implement and execute programs and services for the international student community

  • Liaises with student organizations and advises them on programming and guidelines

  • Meets with students of concern as identified by campus partners (CARE EAP Housing etc.) or ISA staff

  • Serves as the primary contact for international exchange students

  • Works collaboratively with campus partners including First Year Experience Student Success CARE Off-campus Programs the Registrars Office EAP and others

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Other duties at the discretion of the Director of the Office of International Student Affairs.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: Bachelors degree required graduate work in international education international area studies counseling higher education or cultural studies preferred.

Experience: Minimum of three years experience in an international education office with student advising required. Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 immigration advising required.

Communication/Language: Strong: Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community.

Math Ability: Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.

Computer Skills: Experience with word processing spreadsheets databases and website management highly desirable. MS Office Applications and Google Applications.

Other Requirements:

  • US citizenship or permanent resident (required by federal regulations to be a DSO).

  • Knowledge of non-resident alien tax issues preferred.

  • Facility in a modern foreign language preferred.

  • Previous study and/or work abroad preferred.

  • Excellent event-planning communication and presentation skills required.

  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously required.

  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with students faculty members and administrators required.

  • Ability to take initiative.
