Special Education Instructional Coach

Position Summary

The role of a Special Education Instructional Coach is to bean educational leader who will assist teachers and administrators in building capacity within their own skill set to design and provide instructional and behavioral support in the school setting in order to meet the needs of all students.

Job Title: Special Education Instructional Coach

Salary Range: See Teacher Salary Schedule $5000 Stipend for 10 days extended contract work

Contract: 194 DayTeacherContract 10 days extended contract work

Reports To: Director of Special Education

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors Degree in Special Education; Master Degree in Special Education preferred.
  • License: Iowa BOEE K-12 Instructional Strat I Strat II BD/LD and/or STRAT II ID license
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students who receive special education services in a school setting
    • Strong knowledge of MTSS process; strong knowledge of special education legal requirements
    • Ability to develop plan and facilitate district or building level professional development
    • Ability to assist in developing and writing quality IEPs which reinforce a nondiscriminatory service model
    • Ability to observe and coach teachers regarding effective behavioral and instructional practices
    • Demonstrated ability to design supportive instruction and behavioral plans for student success
    • Strong knowledge of functional behavior assessment
    • Strong knowledge of the Continuum of Services as well as SDI Framework in order to promote practical application within the classroom setting
    • Ability to work closely with staff to support design and implementation of instructional and behavioral plans
    • Ability to work closely with special education teachers and PLCs in developing structures that support data based conversation and promote student focused problem solving.
    • Ability to team with instructional coaches throughout the district as it relates to the correlation between general education and special education services
    • Ability to support the onboarding of new special education teachers within the district

Essential Functions

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work and meet with members of the Academic Services team and building instructional coaches to coordinate comprehensive curriculum and instruction efforts.
  • Work with administrators teachers AST department and other district staff to strengthen all aspects of problem solving.
  • Collaborates with Heartland staff to ensure IEPs are carried out with fidelity.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with administrators teachers and across district staff to strengthen all aspects of the instructional program.

Intervention & Student Support

  • Provide student-focused intervention support (for general education at-risk and special education teachers) including support for the General Education Intervention process.
  • Collaborate for effective intervention design.
  • Support staff to gather interpret and use data to design and adjust interventions.
  • Supports MTSS implementation at the building level.

Instructional Coaching & Modeling

  • Coach and model in special education and general education classrooms.
  • Model lessons for teachers when appropriate.
  • Model best instructional practices through actual classroom demonstrations.
  • Make informal classroom observations and provide immediate non-evaluative feedback for the purpose of instructional support and program improvement.

Special Education & Compliance Support

  • Aid in learning and implementation of special education compliance requirements.

Assessment & Data Use

  • Disaggregate assessment data to inform instruction at the classroom level.
  • Assist teachers in developing sound defensible procedures for assessing student progress and for reporting that progress to students and parents in a timely manner.

Classroom Support & Management

  • Work with teachers in the development of effective classroom management strategies and motivation techniques.
  • Work with teachers to provide assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues.

Professional Development

  • Seek professional growth opportunities relevant to increasing capacity relative to the responsibilities of the position including attending cognitive coaching training.
  • Assist in development and facilitation of professional learning at the district level.

Other Functions

  • Collaborate and build a strong working relationship with building and district instructional coaches and special education teachers.
  • Participate in instructional coach professional development training programs as needed.
  • Facilitate and oversee committee meetings as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.
  • Respectfully and appropriately interact with staff community members and visitors.
  • Uphold and adhere to safety rules and policies for Ankeny Community School District.
  • Support the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to District operations.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.



Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.

Work year established by the District; Salary according to schedule adopted annually.
