Call for Fellowship Applications for Fall 2026

Childrens Law Center (CLC) seeks applicants to sponsor as candidates for Equal Justice Works Skadden or other privately funded public service fellowships beginning in September 2026. The Fellow will work with CLCs Healthy Together and Special Legal Projects teams to improve the economic stability of children and families by increasing the capacity of CLC to assist individual families in obtaining and maintaining access to public benefits including TANF SNAP SSI Social Security and public health insurance and supporting our health care provider partners in our Healthy Together Medical Legal Partnership in their efforts to connect children and families with these essential benefits. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and must be submitted no later than June 30 2025.

Program Description

Healthy Together is a medical-legal partnership for DCs children. CLC partners with Childrens National Hospital Marys Center and Unity Health Care to help children and their families overcome barriers to good health by holding agencies landlords and schools accountable for inappropriate school programs the failure to provide medically necessary services and illegal unhealthy housing conditions.

Special Legal Projects expands CLCs legal tools to include other forms of innovative healthy housing advocacy and collaborations impact litigation and new approaches to working toward a future where every child can grow up with a strong foundation of family health and education and live in a world free from poverty trauma racism and other forms of oppression. The Brief Service team which works within Special Legal Projects and collaborates with Healthy Together is often the first point of contact for a community member who is reaching out to CLC.

Fellowship Proposal

CLC seeks applicants to sponsor as candidates for Equal Justice Works Skadden or other privately funded public service fellowships beginning in September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in providing legal advocacy and support to low-income parents and caregivers of children experiencing income insecurity by addressing barriers to accessing public benefits including publicly-funded health insurance and health care services. In addition the Fellow will work to address other health- harming legal needs in the areas of education/special education mental health needs and healthy housing matters so as to provide more holistic legal services to the families we serve.

CLC invites law students recent law school graduates and those with judicial clerkships to apply for sponsorship and propose a creative and impactful fellowship project for the two-year period beginning in September 2026.

CLC is looking for project proposals that focus on strategies to improve income security including addressing barriers that families face in seeking public benefits such as TANF SSI and SNAP as well as increase access to health insurance and health care services for the children and families we serve through our medical-legal partnership. We are particularly interested in proposals that incorporate one or more of the following: language access issues for families with children with special needs; childrens mental health care access; trauma-informed service delivery and; parent and family engagement. Once selected the candidate will work closely with CLC staff to fully develop the project proposal. Candidates who are awarded fellowships will be expected to develop expertise in Healthy Togethers direct services practice areas provide or support provision of direct legal services to clients including advice brief service and extended representation participate in and develop community outreach and education opportunities and when applicable contribute to upstream systemic work including supporting CLCs efforts to utilize impact litigation strategies to improve outcomes for DC children and families.

Requirements and Qualifications for Sponsorship

• Must be law students entering their third year recent graduates who expect to complete a judicial clerkship in the summer of 2026 or lawyers who are otherwise eligible for these fellowships.
• Experience in public interest law legal services or other community lawyering required. Experience that will be considered includes job experience law school clinics clerkships and internships.
• Experience with medical-legal partnerships public benefits impact or appellate litigation or conducting client intakes is a plus.
• Experience working with communities with limited financial resources preferred.
• A demonstrated commitment to social economic and racial justice.
• Cultural humility as shown through demonstrated openness to self-reflection and commitment to understanding and respecting other cultural experiences and points of view and viewing individuals as the experts on their culture and experience.
• Strong legal analysis and research writing and oral advocacy skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Exceptional interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
• Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to proactively identify issues and works to find creative solutions in the face of obstacles.
• Strong independent judgement and decision-making.
• Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are a plus.

Vaccine Mandate

This position requires work on-site in community health clinics. Clinics require that Childrens Law Centers employees working on-site receive the COVID-19 vaccine and all eligible booster shots or be granted medical or religious exemption from the mandate. Individuals in this role must be fully vaccinated including all eligible booster shots prior to their first day or have applied for and received medical or religious exemption.

Hybrid Working Conditions

Childrens Law Center is currently operating on a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to work in-person from Childrens Law Centers office a minimum of two days per week. At least one of these days must be either Tuesday or Wednesday. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change based on organizational needs and/or best practices for health and safety. Hybrid work expectations may vary depending upon role responsibilities.
