What Were Looking For

Baylor University is seeking a Laboratory Technician for Algal Culture Collection to support the mission and vision of the University in the McKindles Lab at the Department of Biology within the College of Arts & Sciences by assisting with the establishment of an Algal Culture Collection and aid in research on aquatic microbial ecology. Primary responsibilities will center on managing the Algal Culture Collection. The successful candidate should have lab experience in microbial culturing including media preparation sterile technique and microscopy.

The candidate must be a self-starter and work well in a team work may be possible if desired but is not a requirement for this and/or interest in cyanobacteria and biofuel relevant algae is a plus.A successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse research team lead project design and methods development as well as assist with publications and presentations.

This position is temporary with an anticipated end date one year from start. Pending performance and the availability of funding this position may be extended.

A Bachelors Degree in Biology or related field is required. A Masters Degree in Biology Microbiology or related field and one year of relevant work experienceis preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of one another.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint Microsoft Teams and Zoom

Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a Full-Time basis.

What You Will Do

  • Maintenance and monitoring of cultures
  • Establish protocols for long-term storage isolation and addition of new cultures into the collection
  • Run experiments on the effect of manipulation of culture growth conditions
  • General lab maintenance
  • Assist with drafting and editing of manuscript proposals
  • Assist with receipt and inspection of material
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylors mission
  • Ability to comply with university policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
