Job Description

The Recreation Leader performs a variety of tasks including park operations environmental programming and natural resource management at Walnut Creek Wetland Park. This position is a key member of our staff and contributes to our team effort to serve the public by providing courteous customer service and protecting our natural areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Job Duties:

  • Open and/or close park
  • Respond to patrons questions and rental inquiries
  • Reinforce Park policies through education
  • Provide support for drop in programming including handling animal ambassadors providing park history and delivering free services
  • Perform animal care duties
  • Contribute to the implementation of special events and nature programming
  • Maintain trails gardens bird feeders and nest boxes
  • Participate in wildlife monitoring and natural resource inventory initiatives
  • Work alongside volunteer groups
  • Perform maintenance field work and custodial duties
  • Assess and address safety concerns and serve as part of parks emergency response team

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age with a strong interest in nature education and the outdoors
  • High school degree
  • Possess a valid drivers license
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Practice courteous customer service
  • Responsible organized and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions to include heat and humidity and light rain
Preferred Skills:
  • College degree coursework or experience in education natural resources management parks and tourism environmental science or related area.
  • Willingness to lead nature and volunteer programs for all ages.
  • Working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Comfortable being around a variety of native wildlife and handling educational ambassador reptiles.
  • Familiarity with a variety of hand tools and power equipment (shovel rake leaf blower loppers etc.)
  • Occasionally manage items that weigh up to 50lbs and travel overrough terrain regularly

Additional Information

Position Hours:

This is a 15-20 hour per week position with weekend holiday and evening hours required. Schedule will vary due to park programs and needs.
