POSITION: High School English & History Teacher

SALARY: $59264 to $77712 DOE (Contract starting school year 2025-2026) 1 employee for 2 subjects

REPORTS TO: PSIS Principal

LOCATION: Paschal Sherman Indian School Omak WA

Basic Funtion: High School English and History Teacher who is certified in Washington State to join our school community. This position involves not only delivering high-quality instruction in English Language Arts and Social Studies but also working in collaboration with Salish (Nslxcin) language teachers to support an immersion program. Additionally this teacher will facilitate an elective speech class helping students develop essential public speaking and communication skills or may create a specially designed elective offering.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

  • Requires valid Washington State teaching certification in English and History for Secondary Education grades 9-12
  • Requires experience or interest in working within an immersion or bilingual educational setting particularly with indigenous languages and cultures.
  • Prefer familiarity with Salish culture and language.
  • Must obtain a First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Requires a valid WA State Drivers license.
  • Requires proof of degree/transcripts certifications and THREE written letters of reference along with application.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities;

  • Requires Strong knowledge of 9th -12th English and History
  • Requires strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Requires ability to plan develop and implement comprehensive English and History curricula for 9th and 10th grade students aligned with Washington State and BIE standards.
  • Requires the ability to engage and inspire students through innovative creative teaching methods.
  • Requires strong commitment to cultural inclusivity and working with indigenous language teachers to promote immersion.
  • Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Requires the ability to manage a classroom effectively fostering both individual and collaborative student learning.
  • Requires ability to develop and implement curriculum.
  • Requires ability to maintain classroom control.
  • Requires experience in teaching public speaking speech or debate.
  • Ability to provide engaging differentiated instruction to students with diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to evaluate students progress through formative and summative assessments providing feedback to guide students development.
  • Ability to actively participate in collaborative efforts with Salish language educators to support a bilingual and cultural immersion environment.
  • Ability to integrate elements of the Salish language culture and history into the English and History curriculum where appropriate.
  • Ability to teach an elective Speech class that emphasizes the development of effective oral communication public speaking skills and critical thinking.
  • Ability to perform a variety of support activities related to behavior management and classroom instruction of students.
  • Requires ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Requires social skills necessary to effectively communicate with staff students parents and the public.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.

If required of this position you must possess and maintain avalid Washington State drivers license and be eligible for the Tribes Vehicle Insurance. In addition this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
