Job Title: CROSSING GUARD/lunch Monitor

Classification: Support Personnel Pay Scale

Range: I

Description: The School Crossing Guard/Lunch Monitor assists students to safely cross streets and roads before and after school. Duties include exposure to dirt dust and extreme seasonal temperatures.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must have a knowledge of traffic regulations and acceptable street crossing procedures
  • Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to exhibit mature judgment
  • Ability to verbally communicate to students in English and Spanish
  • Must be an energetic highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets
  • Hold stop sign stopping motorist so that children may cross street safely
  • Assist students as needed to cross intersections on the way to and from school
  • Direct or escort pedestrians across streets stopping traffic as necessary
  • Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at street and railroad crossings and construction sites.
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
  • Report unsafe behavior of children to school officials.
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to appropriate authorities
  • Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards using signs flags lanterns and hand signals.
  • Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas.
  • Stop speeding vehicles to warn drivers of traffic laws.
  • Set up school crossing signs and markers at designated points
  • Complete district inservice training program before assuming responsibility for the crosswalk
  • Establish and maintain good student conduct at the crosswalk
  • Assure that students walk in the crosswalk
  • Be on duty at the designated times to promote timely routines for students
  • Report unsafe student behavior in or near the crosswalk to the principals
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices attend on-going training classes as directed and read professional publications for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel records and/or information
  • Support and follow the rules regulations and policies set by the School Board the assigned school and the District
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board the Principal or his/her designee.

Length of Employment:

  • Nine (9) months
  • School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year.

Reports to: Building Principal

Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy GDO
