Job Description

Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is seeking an extraordinary Dean of Students to work in our school. Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) is an innovative public high school that engages young adults to build a vision for their futures through supportive relationships and meaningful competency-based learning. BDEA students are 16 to 23 years old having attended traditional schools where they may have felt lost unsafe or disengaged. At BDEA students are listened to and respected for who they are and the gifts they possess. Working with experienced faculty in an environment that blends strong academics and support students are given the opportunity to earn a Boston Public Schools diploma and to reach their fullest potential through a competency-based curriculum that inspires critical and creative thinking independent learning and active citizenship. Our extended program which runs from 8am to 4:30pm and does not have grade levels serves students who are promoted from middle school without being academically prepared for high school have dropped out of high school and decided to return to earn a diploma or are unable to attend regular school hours due to health issues full time work and/or full time parenting obligations. The school employs 60 full and part-time staff to work with 410 students and is governed by an active Board of Trustees. All employees are expected to uphold BDEAs mission to build a consistent unified anti-racist inclusive community that stimulates greater student agency engagement and academic achievement.

Title: Coordinator of Climate and Culture BASAS 3A

Reports to:School Leader


The Coordinator of Climate and Culture supports fostering a positive school climate by implementing restorative justice practices managing student behavior and enhancing family engagement. This individual will work with students staff and families to promote conflict resolution mediate disputes and uphold consistent discipline standards while nurturing a collaborative and inclusive school role requires a commitment to restorative practices a proactive approach to student discipline and a strong belief in the importance of family and community engagement in fostering student success.

Responsibilities:


Restorative Justice Circle Practice and Mediation

  • Support students and staff in Circle Practice/Restorative Justice practices school-wide.
  • Supports in coordinating peer mediation and restorative justice/alternative discipline responses.

Student Behavior and Discipline Management

  • Assist with implementing disciplinary policies and procedures in accordance with Boston Public Schools discipline policies and school values.
  • Support with maintaining accurate school discipline records for students including collecting culture/discipline referrals.
  • Support with implementing behavior plans crisis interventions and safety plans.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Establish and maintain contact with parents/guardians to ensure student success.
  • Coordinate and oversee family meetings related to student attendance behavior and discipline.
  • Strengthen and engage families as partners in planning and problem-solving.

Student Support and Development

  • Develop and maintain a positive behavior system for students who need to step out of class temporarily.
  • Implement disciplinary policies and procedures including family communication and coordination of hearings.
  • Support students through de-escalation when needed.

Professional Development and Staff Support

  • Model professional behaviors and contribute to school-wide development.
  • Coordinate professional development for teachers and paras on restorative justice/circle practice and effective classroom management.

Operational Management and School Safety

  • Support with ensuring safety and security of school hallways classrooms and school grounds.
  • Work with staff to develop and implement safety protocols and handbooks.
  • Work with appropriate staff to create and distribute school safety plans.

School Climate and Culture

  • Collaborate with leadership to create a welcoming learning environment.
  • Build a culture of collaboration achievement and respect among all school community members.
  • Monitor tools for measuring school climate and culture improvements including discipline and attendance data

Data Management and Reporting

  • Maintain data entry into SIS and other databases.
  • Maintaining accurate school discipline records for students including collecting culture/discipline referrals from staff and delivering prompt follow-through.
  • Analyze track and report behavioral data to monitor student social-emotional development.

School-Wide Events and Activities

  • Attend field trips and community events as assigned.
  • Support planning and facilitation of school-based events.
  • Participate in the creation and execution of after-school academic programs to improve student outcomes.

Other

  • Perform other duties requested by the School Leader or Administrative Team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
  • 1-3 years experience in urban school school system working with a diverse ethnic student body
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word PowerPoint Excel) and Google Drive Suite
  • Comfort and familiarity with student information databases (Aspen SIS etc)
