Job Description

Minimum Requirements:

  • Accepted application from the Office of Science SULI or CCI program.
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Compensation and Benefits:

Stipend:

  • Participants receive a stipend of $650 per week during the appointment.

Travel Support:

  • Selected students are reimbursed for one round trip domestic travel to the host laboratory Keep in mind travel support is restricted to participating students with a permanent address more than 50 miles from the host laboratory.
  • Transportation expenses will be reimbursed based on the most direct route.
  • Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current government rate or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare whichever is lower. Travel by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare.

Housing Support

    • Housing information will be provided to eligible interns prior to arrival at the host laboratory. In general housing opportunities will vary from laboratory to laboratory. An allowance is available for participants placed at host laboratories that are unable to offer direct housing arrangements.

INL is a science-based applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energys mission in nuclear energy research science and national defense. With more than 6200 scientists researchers and support staff the laboratory works with national and international governments universities and industry partners to discover new science and development technologies that underpin the nations nuclear and renewable energy national security and environmental missions.

INL hosts nearly 700 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INLs mission. Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in several operations and business subject areas.

Questions

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) and the Community College Internship (CCI) programs encourage undergraduate students to pursue science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research under the mentorship of laboratory staff scientists or engineers on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI/CCI programs are sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Sciences Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories/facilities.
