    FCPS Student Support Specialist Job Description

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Student Support Specialist identifies recruits and instructs students deemed to have a high degree of difficulty of being promoted into the next grade level achieving graduation and/or making a successful transition from school to a career with advancement opportunities. They are responsible for working with the students and families of Fredericksburg City Public Schools to improve student achievement attendance conduct and overall school performance. The Student Support Specialist shall work to improve graduation rates for all population subgroups within the division. They shall enhance supports and opportunities for all students and families by serving as a key liaison between community-based organizations businesses faith-based organizations parents families and schools.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Bachelors degree in social service counseling business education or a related discipline is preferred.
    2. Experience working with youth accompanied by knowledge of child development issues.
    3. Experience providing ongoing academic guidance for students preferred.
    4. Exceptional skills in human relations leadership supervision and motivational techniques.
    5. Ability to work 11months per year.
    6. Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
    7. Ability to establish the appropriate boundaries while developing and nurturing supportive relationships with students.
    8. Ability to educate a variety of constituencies and interested parties about the program by developing ongoing relationships and making formal presentations.
    9. Ability to develop curriculum and educational opportunities consistent with the Jobs for Americas Graduates (JAG) model.

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
    • Knowledge of content concepts principles and methodologies of family engagement strategies and truancy policies in a public-school setting.
    • Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for reducing behaviors that put students at risk of not graduating from high school.
    • Proven expertise working with traditional and non-traditional families.
    • Demonstrated ability to observe monitor and evaluate individual progress toward established goals.
    • Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex programs and activities and ability to organize schedule and monitor work assignments.
    • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and demonstrate skills in decision-making problem-solving conflict resolution interpersonal relationships program management and planning.
    • Demonstrated ability to use and access a variety of media and technology to support job functions but not limited to proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.
    • Ability to understand and impart positive behavior best practices to staff and families.

    PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
    • Provides appropriate curriculum and opportunities to ensure students achieve specific Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG) competencies through classroom instruction.
    • Teaches through a variety of methods including lecture hands-on activities and team teaching and tailors the program and teaching methods for the needs of each specific student and implements an intervention strategy/plan for each participant.
    • Ensures an appropriate pool of students by directly recruiting students and obtaining referrals from an Advisory Committee school personnel and parents; holds interviews with prospective candidates and those making referrals to determine using JVG guidelines the appropriateness of the prospective student for the program.
    • Administers testing programs including pre-/post-tests and career interest surveys.
    • Establishes and implements a career development plan for all enrolled students.
    • Assists students in finding and maintaining quality employment and/or post-secondary educational programs upon graduation; works closely with students and employers for 12 months after the end of the school year to ensure a satisfactory employment outcome; develops a plan for contacts with non-graduates to ensure effective transition to employment or additional education.
    • Develops and maintains positive effective working relationships with school personnel including teachers administrators students and members of the Advisory Committee.
    • Develops a pool of effective community support resources by working with employers parents civic groups and legislators to build awareness of and support for the program; develops job opportunities participates in public relations activities attends meetings and speaks to various community groups.
    • Creates training opportunities through hands-on activities film presentations guest speakers and workshops; assists with student civic and social opportunities.
    • Provides students with guidance counseling and support within appropriate limits; refers students to additional support services on an as-needed basis. Develops and implements individual intervention strategies to increase the likelihood that these students will stay in school and graduate.
    • Complies with all state laws and division policies.
    • Complies with all documentation requirements in a timely fashion including contacts and activities involving students employers and other groups.
    • Participates in JVG staff regional and statewide meetings and staff development activities.
    • Serves as in integral team member of the schools instructional leadership team and actively participates in academic behavioral and attendance team meetings.
    • Collaborate with supervisor to determine data points to periodically analyze for progress monitoring toward an increased graduation rate and student success.
    • Utilizes the components of a profile of characteristics of potential dropouts with the high probability of not graduating.
    • Tracks the progress of individual and subpopulations of students as they progress toward graduation.
    • Identifies and links social agencies with youth at risk of not graduating and their parents/guardians.
    • Actively facilitates student/staff/parent meetings to help families understand specific needs of students and provide resources available to help them.
    • Facilitates professional development to help staff implement evidence-based strategies that foster positive outcomes.
    • Collaborates with feeder middle school to utilize the components of a profile of characteristics of potential dropouts to assist the school in identifying middle school students with the high probability of not graduating. Work with the students and the faculty member who assists in the creation of SOL graduation plans.
    • Analyze data and develop criteria to develop student/family caseloads.

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Performs various school-related functions such as lunch duty hall duty etc. and other expectations as assigned by supervisor.
    • Participates in field trips.
    • Completes special projects and other projects/duties as assigned by the Regional Manager for Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG).

    TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 220-day teacher contract with additional paid summer expectations

    START DATE: Based on School Board approval

    EVALUATION: Performance in this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations of teachers
