  • Job Title: Special Education Teacher
    Reports to: Executive Director of Special Education
    Terms and Conditions: 10 months 183-day school year work calendar.
    Salary: Per Faculty Senate collective bargaining agreement initial placement between Ba Step1 and MA60 Step 5 based on experience and educational credits.
    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Qualifications:
    1. Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with LBS 1 Certification.
    2. Minimum 3 years experience in working with students with emotional behavioral and academic needs.
    3. Experience in developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans and Behavior Intervention Plans.
    4. Knowledgeable about the IDEA and the laws that govern working with students with disabilities.
    5. Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to clearly communicate with students parents and team members; ability to writing detailed reports and documentation regarding student progress and needs.
    6. Demonstrated commitment to equity and eliminating systemic obstacles for students of color.

    Position Summary:
    The employee in this position must provide innovative teaching in working with students that demonstrate academic needs that impacts their ability to access the curriculum without support. The candidate must have experience in managing a caseload as well as developing and monitoring IEP progress. In addition the candidate should be familiar with adapting curriculum to meet student needs while meeting the Common Core Standards. Ideal candidates will also possess experiences in working with populations of students that require a great deal of individual support in the area of executive functioning. This program is currently seeking highly skilled teachers that ensure the curriculum remains rigorous and meets with all expectations for graduation requirements.

    Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned.)
    1. Ability to create write monitor and facilitate IEPs for students on caseload. Actively participate in IEP meetings for students assigned to the caseload.
    2. Participate in parent meetings outside of the IEP to support student needs.
    3. Prepare materials and plan daily instruction appropriate to each assigned class.
    4. Establish reasonable expectations and keep detailed records for oral and written work and explain grading procedures.
    5. Maintain desirable discipline standards in the classroom and assist when needed in other school areas with student disciplinary management.
    6. Maintain accurate student records including attendance.
    7. Establish and post a schedule of times for helping students who need individual assistance.
    8. Develop and administer appropriate tests and report performance to parents dean/counselors and students.
    9. Understand and explain special emergency procedures to students and supervise students during situations calling for them.
    10. Work collaboratively with special education teachers general education teachers and Support Team in understanding the needs of students and counseling students. Effectively supervise and include paraprofessionals in supporting the academic and social emotional needs of students.
    11. Be sensitive to physical and learning styles of students with respect to their identified disabilities.
    12. Promote student respect for the rights of others in the classroom.
    13. Attend department meetings
    14. Work with the Executive Director of Special Education and other staff members in curriculum development.
    15. Maintain positive professional relations with colleagues.
    16. Hold high expectations for all students and demonstrate a deep belief that all students can learn and succeed.
    17. Communicate openly with students staff parents and other stakeholders regarding students achievement and progress in the classroom.
    18. Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Physical/visual/cognitive requirements:
    Standing sitting walking lifting carrying reaching manual dexterity talking hearing and near visual acuity required. Analytical skills to assess and evaluate student needs learning styles and progress and to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) based on student assessments. Problem-solving skills to identify and implement effective strategies to address learning and behavioral challenges. Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs. Ability to make informed decisions regarding curriculum adjustments and teaching approaches. Memory and recall ability to remember individual student needs and tailor instruction accordingly and to keep track of multiple students IEPs and progress reports. Ability to understand and respond appropriately to student emotions and behaviors.
