The position is entry level and is located in the Communications Office in Raleigh. This position will handle project outreach external communications writing content for press releases and project webpages and will develop communication plans. This position will also develop/write social media content and will monitor social accounts.
The employee will interact with various employees in the department that can include deputy secretaries and other senior management as well as division engineers.
It is crucial that this employee understands and supports the goals and commitments of the NCDOT so these can be effectively communicated internally and externally through available mediums. The employee must synthesize complex information so it can be understood by a variety of audiences. This position also requires the ability to balance multiple responsibilities under a tight deadline and to maintain professional working relationships with individuals both within and outside the department.
This position will be on an on-call rotation and must work during crisis situations.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Strong writing skills with AP knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and synthesize complex information and write in a clear succinct storytelling style.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects tasks and priorities.
- Knowledge and proficiency in social media platforms including Facebook Twitter and YouTube Cision SharePoint Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
Additional Expectations:
Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of large-scale projects and crisis situations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in communications public relations public affairs journalism English or related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
