JOB GOAL:
To provide services to special needs children in teaching and demonstrate leadership in assisting classroom teachers to provide successful learning experience for special needs students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Massachusetts Teachers Certification
- Certification in Moderate Special Needs Generic Teacher or Special Education.
- Teacher of young children with special needs
- Masters degree preferred
- Demonstrated diagnostic and prescriptive ability with learning styles
- Commitment to designing and conducting in-service
- Commitment to increasing professional growth
REPORTS TO: Administrator of Special Education
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
To Teach:
- To teach small groups or individuals suspected of having learning impairments.
- To strive to discover learning styles and teaching techniques that will prove most effective with each individual student
- To develop implement and teach curriculum designed for special needs students consistent with state requirements
- To establish and maintain standards of individual students behavior often providing motivation through a reward system.
To Communicate:
- To meet with classroom teachers specialists and principals to discuss individual program to be designed for student(s) who will receive supplemental instruction on an ongoing basis.
- To Schedule groups and individuals for specific remedial instruction.
- To confer with parents of student(s) who will receive supplemental instruction to discuss students program.
- To act as a liaison between classroom teachers specialists and administrators.
- To participate in case of conferences concerning individual suspected special needs students.
- To assist teacher with modification for the student.
- To provide students with emotional support positive reinforcement and counseling to build self-image and to do future planning
- To adhere to the law of confidentiality
- To assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological and disciplinary problems of each special needs student.
To Plan and Serve:
- To plan and prepare individual daily lessons for each student.
- To devise and experiment with innovative teaching methods strategies techniques and learning materials in an on-going attempt to extend possible approaches to working effectively with students with impaired learning ability
- To participate in grading students.
To Record Report and Evaluate:
- To evaluate the progress of each student prior to or enrolled in the special needs program by observing the student in the classroom and resource room by studying written reports about the student prepared by his/her teacher(s)
- To evaluate and order materials necessary for instruction out of the classroom and provide these materials as a resource as well to the classroom teacher and specialists.
- To keep parents informed of their childs progress through written reports and/or oral communication.
- To write review and update educational plans progress reports and keep these consistent with state regulations.
- To evaluate individual students with formal/informal non-discriminatory assessments diagnoses and reports in both written and verbal form his/her findings to the TEAM.
To Monitor:
- To monitor individual special needs students within and outside of the regular classroom.
- To monitor the students progress through formal/informal evaluation processes.
To Demonstrate Professionalism:
- To keep abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications attending professional meetings seminars and conferences and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- To conduct in-service workshops for classroom teachers and specialists.
- To recommend methods to be used evaluating the methods on an ongoing basis.
- To serve as a consultant to the schools professional staff on matters pertaining to the education of children with learning impairments; to confer and act as a consultant and advocate of the student with parents and outside agencies regarding the educational social and personal problems of the student.
- To attend staff meetings on a regular basis to attend and serve on staff committees; to assist with school duties and scheduling.
- To demonstrate alternative teaching strategies in the regular classroom.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School Year
SALARY: Per Contract
