Job Goal: To assist the Special Education Department in helping students take full advantage of the instructional program during a teachers absence.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Possess at least 9 credit hours of college coursework in the field of Special Education or Child Development from a regionally accredited institution.
- Possess appropriate experience (at least 12 months) working with children preferably in an educational setting.

Reports To:Special Education Director and/or Building Principal.
Background CheckRequired:(Ala. Code 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to plan and organize effectively.
- Ability to implement lesson plans based on local and state courses of study.
- Basic knowledge skills and ability to operate computer programs and related technology.
- Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents teachers and administrators in support of instruction.
- Physical dexterity mobility and strength to perform the essential functions of this position.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge and understanding of the school systems rules and policies administrative procedures and state and federal rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Essential Functions:
- Performs tasks related to classroom instruction and activities as indicated by lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher.
- Prepares classroom materials.
- Performs non-instructional classroom duties as directed.
- Supervises students during lunch assemblies field trips etc.
- Works with individual and small groups of students.
- Consults with teacher(s) and support personnel regarding student progress.
- Manages the classrooms environment as indicated by the teacher of record or support personnel.
- Collects data on student progress and performance and reports to teacher of record or support personnel.
- Maintains accurate grades for students.
- Reports student progress to parents as directed.
- Participates in parent conference and IEP meetings as necessary.
- Keeps records and completes necessary reports on a timely basis as directed.
- Performs other duties within the scope of his/ her employment as may be assigned.
- This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
- Under the Students First Act of 2011 no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.
Expected Employment:187 days/ 7.5 hrs. (full year)
Evaluation:According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines.
SalaryRange: According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year).
Up to 10 years experience will be counted for new employees who provide documentation of full-time experience in the area of concentration.
