Job Description

Position Summary:

The Assistant Principal for Special Programs provides integrated leadership to support high-quality inclusive instructional and support services for students across K12 programs. This position serves as a collaborative instructional leader and operational manager supporting both school-based initiatives and regional special programs. The role includes responsibilities in compliance oversight staff supervision student services coordination and the development of a positive and equitable school culture. The assistant principal builds strong community partnerships and fosters continuous learning for all students and staff.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership and Staff Support

  • Promote high-impact standards-based instruction and professional growth.
  • Support teachers with effective instructional practices data use and differentiation.
  • Participate in the supervision and evaluation of certified and classified staff.
  • Help recruit onboard and retain qualified staff in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching aligned with district goals and equity priorities.

Student Services and School Culture

  • Coordinate student support services (e.g. special education behavioral interventions transitions).
  • Promote a safe inclusive school climate that supports student engagement and positive behavior.
  • Respond to and manage student discipline using restorative and culturally responsive practices.
  • Assist in the orientation and support of students entering or transitioning across programs.

Program and Compliance Coordination

  • Ensure fidelity to special education regulations IEP timelines and documentation standards.
  • Monitor program implementation and service delivery for legal compliance and effectiveness.
  • Support reporting requirements and maintain accurate student and program records.
  • Support staff with professional development trainings and obtain certified as a Crisis Prevention Intervention trainer

Collaboration and Community Engagement

  • Act as a liaison among school staff regional program teams families and community partners.
  • Build community partnerships that enhance opportunities for students and families.
  • Represent the school and HDESD in regional and state educational forums.

Equity and Innovation

  • Lead with an equity lens to ensure inclusive and culturally responsive practices.
  • Identify and remove barriers to student access and achievement.
  • Support innovation in curriculum instruction and service delivery.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Education or related field.
  • Valid Oregon Administrative License (or eligible to obtain).
  • Minimum of five years of teaching or educational leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education law instructional best practices and student behavior systems.
  • Strong skills in communication collaboration and data-driven decision-making.
  • Must be able to bend stoop and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and consistent attendance is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in special education leadership or schoolwide student services.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) and multicultural competencies.
  • Successful experience managing a diverse school community.

Additional Information

  • Must possess reliable transportation for regional travel.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with flexibility and professionalism.
  • Participation in evening meetings or extended work hours as needed.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to: talk hear walk frequently sit stand stoop kneel crouch crawl use hand dexterity for computer work handle items reach with hand and arms lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds and see close and at a distance have peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Workloads are heavy and timelines may be unreasonably short at times. Requests and issues are often received which require immediate attention and conflict with other priorities.
