The Transportation Manager at the Burlington School District works with the Director of Property Services and with various administrators and parents to develop bus routes oversee bus drivers and work with other Bus Contractors that provide transportation services for the district. The goal is to implement and maintain effective efficient and safe bus operations for the Burlington School District.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Organize and schedule district-wide student bus transportation
- Work with various administrators and other personnel in developing the bus schedule.
- Effectively communicate with supervisor(s) property service staff and other necessary personnel.
- Develop a bus schedule ensuring pick-up and drop-off of students at the appropriate locations at the appropriate times.
- Complete annual performance review of district drivers and reviews and assists with any third party bus contracts.
- Work to ensure all bus drivers are in compliance with the following list of rules and regulations and to provide periodic training/reviews of these rules.
- Train drivers to be CDL licensed (obtain training certification if necessary).
- Make appropriate changes to the bus schedule on a daily basis.
- Work closely and cooperatively with the bus drivers bus aides and contracted bus drivers in the development of efficient and effective schedules.
- Promptly respond to parent/guardian inquiries requests and complaints in a professional and confidential manner.
- Collect bus incident and accident reports following up using the appropriate administrative process.
- Observe all safety regulations and procedures and notify management of such concerns if encountered.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Maintains discipline when students are on the bus.
- Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
- Keep the assigned bus clean.
- Must perform pre-trip inspection per CDL/Bus Endorsement regulations.
- Notifies proper authority in case of mechanical failure issues.
- Discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Exercise responsible leadership when on out of district trips.
- Transports only authorized students.
- Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
- Enforces regulations on prohibited behaviors.
- Use discretion in discussing school affairs recognizing the value of positive school-community relations.
- Comply with Board and administrative policies regulations and procedures and reinforces students doing the same.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Participate productively in staff meetings and professional committees; participate in scheduled inservice days.
- Cooperate with and support other faculty and staff in planning instruction and coordinating services for students.
- Attendance in accordance with established days/hours of work.
- Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- Required:Valid Vermont drivers license.
- Required: Class B CDL Type 1 Bus Endorsement (air brakes) and Passenger Endorsement.
- Required: Five years experience as a CDL licensed bus driver.
- Required: Valid Federal DOT Medical Card
- Preferred: Two years of experience working in management.
- Personnel management experience including team leadership experience with a preference for experience hiring training managing and evaluating employees and experience with labor relations and union environments.
- Familiar with laws and regulations governing education in Vermont (preferred).
- Familiar with FERPA
- Experience working with google products (Docs Sheets Gmail Calendar) and Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook Teams Powerpoint).
- Available for consultation outside of work hours.

- Ability to read and write at an acceptable level.
- Ability to use and care for building service equipment and supplies according to written and oral instructions.
- Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
- Ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.
EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:
Compensation is based on experience. In addition to great health benefits and paid time off this full-time position is an hourly position paid Bi-Weekly. First shift hours are primarily 6:00 am - 2:30 pm Monday through Friday during the school year. BENEFITS: Benefits eligible on start date. 30 days to enroll in coverage from start day. BSD Benefits!
