About the role
The Modelling & Engineering Division is responsible for leading the strategy for future power system modelling in collaboration with the Operations Technology Program managing power system data and models AEMOs data request functions assessment of high-impact low-probability events review of major power system incidents and the commissioning of new inter-network capacity between NEM regions.
You will provide wider Operations technical leadership for strategic power system modelling software projects and initiatives including through AEMOs Operations Technology Program (OTP) that will facilitate the energy transition in Australia. Decisions about key modelling priorities and future approach will be a key part of your role along with working cross functionally across the AEMO business and potentially internationally. These projects are impactful and span many aspects of power system operation from automation and state-of-the-art analysis to the rollout and utilisation of measurement devices for increased system visibility.
What you will be doing
- Technical Lead for key strategic power system modelling projects and decisions and Business Lead for the Operations Modelling Program.
- Providing expert recommendations to support Operations (and the Operations Technology program - OTP) in terms of strategy content prioritisation and progress on modelling and modelling approaches.
- Supporting the development of AEMO strategies for future power system modelling needs including model data management versioning model development processes and decisions on hardware software and appropriate tools.
- Leading cross-divisional engagements with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure alignment on technical activities.
- Engaging with external stakeholders such as software vendors and consultants for input to key activities.
- Supporting the development of specific models such as PSS/E and PSCAD and associated tools and undertaking relevant power system analysis to support the resolution of modelling issues.
- Contributing to industry working groups on request to collaborate with NSPs for model management and development activities including consulting with industry experts.
- Contributing to relevant internal and external technical working groups including through the ISON CIGRE IEEE and software vendors.
What you will bring to the role
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems engineering.
- Significant experience in power systems analysis operations and engineering.
- Understanding of electrical engineering principles and modelling of components specifically related to electricity generation transmission and distribution system theory analysis and modelling.
- Understanding the technical complexities that underpin the energy transition in terms of emerging system phenomena device/plant interactions and the most appropriate tools and toolsets to analyse these.
- Proven ability to lead and deliver on a range of projects ensuring timely delivery of outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and to work collaboratively to drive progress and meaningful outcomes.
- Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly both verbally and in written form
