Job Description

Description

Edinburgh Business School is awarding three PhD scholarships as Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions to outstanding doctoral candidates with clear potential to excel as academic teachers and researchers in Digital Twin Application and Assessment as part of the TransiT Research Hub.

GTA PhD Projects in Digital Twin Applications and Assessment

TransiT is in a consortium of eight universities supporting the formation of a new national research centre funded by a significant UKRI and stakeholder co-investment for a 5-year and 45M programme of challenge-led research into digital twinning for transport decarbonization. Digital twinning is an innovative methodology that involves creating virtual replicas of physical transport systems by integrating real-time data from sensors and infrastructure monitoring systems and provides rapid testing and optimisation of various decarbonisation more information please visit the TransiT website We are seeking proposals for three projects contributing to Digital Twin Application and Assessment this work involves the use of social science techniques (social psychology human factors equality and diversity policy knowledge) to inform assess and refine Digital Twin Development. Applicants interested in any of the stated project areas are strongly encouraged to contact the supervisory team for an informal discussion about their research proposal prior to submitting their application.

TOPIC REFERENCE: 1DTAA: Ensuring the transition to low carbon transport is equitable and fair

It is essential to build in equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) into decarbonization modelling. Ill-conceived changes to the current transport system could inadvertently make it more difficult for disabled people or those living with conditions which affect their mobility and/or engagement with society. Such change provides an unprecedented opportunity to tackle long standing barriers to inclusion. TransiT aims to provide a just transition to decarbonizing transport. We invite proposals that develop a deep understanding of different user experiences and the barriers/enablers to accessible transport usage. Proposals should include how to subsequently work with technical colleagues to operationalise and build EDI into the core computer models and digital twins. The overarching research aim for the project is to determine how transport can be transformed to be both low carbon and fully accessible to disabled people. The supervisory team are Prof Kate Sang and Prof Guy Walker. For further information please contact Professor Kate Sang

TOPIC REFERENCE: 2DTAA:Accelerating transport decarbonisation using human factors and digital twins.

The UK is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 68% by 2030. Transport accounts for 27% of these emissions. There is a pressing need to: 1) design a radically different transport system which includes new technology new energy inputs and accommodates changing transport demands; 2) de-risk the transition by removing uncertainty; and 3) optimise transport operation and the user experience. The solution of digital twinning that incorporates real-world real time data are an exciting new testbed for Human Factors studies and insights. Proposals are invited on how to create a Human Factors digital twin to create and test a range of future transport scenarios. The study will combine existing Human Factors methodologies and insights with the modelling capability within the TransiT research hub (). The supervisory team are Prof Guy Walker with Dr Luciana Blaha. For further information please contact Prof Guy Walker

TOPIC 3 REFERENCE 3DTAA: Human Capital Readiness to Support Digital Twinning Adoption

We invite proposals on how to develop a holistic framework for Human Capital Readiness to support the adoption of Digital Twin technologies. This interdisciplinary research grounded in human capital theory aims to assess readiness and design actionable frameworks to enhance the skills and competencies essential for successful digital twin integration. The research will contribute to the conceptualization and empirical validation of the human capital readiness framework. The research will involve analyzing diverse datasets including qualitative interviews MCDM methodologies and large-scale survey data. The primary goal is to identify the critical human capital dimensions required for digital twin adoption in the UK freight transportation sector and to develop practical guidelines for capability development that organizations can adopt to accelerate digital twin implementation. The supervisory team are Prof Guy Walker with Dr Mohammad Shujaat Mubarik. For further information please contact Dr Mohammad Shujaat Mubarik
