Job Description

Drive the next leap in battery materials innovation

At Sicona Battery Technologies were producing next-generation silicon-carbon (Si/C) anode materials for lithium-ion batteries developed and engineered to significantly increase energy density and improve fast-charging performance. Our purpose is to empower a sustainable energy future without costing the earth cooling the planet (today). To support our commercialisation efforts were searching for an Electrochemist to conduct experimental work that advances the electrochemical performance of our materials. This is a Full-time hands-on role based at our Wollongong laboratory involving lithium-ion cell fabrication electrochemical testing and analysis of material behaviour and performance. Learn more about Sicona here: .

What the Role Involves

  • Undertake research and development (R&D) projects to commercialise new technologies and optimise existing ones.
  • Assemble and test different types of lithium-ion batteries including half and full cells in various formats (coin pouch cylindrical and other specialised configurations).
  • Characterise the physical properties of materials; perform testing with advanced electrochemical characterisation methodologies; and study the mechanisms dominating the materials functionalities.
  • Use statistical and computational tools to analyse test data and extract trends
  • Work closely with the team to understand and refine the performance of materials; design and conduct experiments to check out new ideas; and develop models that predict material performance.
  • Partner with engineering and commercial teams to align material performance with product and market requirements.
  • Maintain the battery fabrication and testing equipment.
  • Provide troubleshooting for experimental setups and hands-on support in ongoing R&D projects.
  • Maintain meticulous records capture experimental data and prepare technical reports while contributing to the development of Intellectual Property procedures and documentation to support reproducibility and quality assurance.
  • Ensure work complies with WHS quality regulatory and company standards.

What Youll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry with strong electrochemistry background
  • PhD in lithium-ion battery-related fields
  • In-depth understanding of and experience with advanced electrochemical characterisation methods such as CV EIS LSV etc.
  • In-depth understanding of and experience with characterising metal ion batteries with advanced electrochemical cells.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with the operation and maintenance of potentiostats.
  • Understanding of unitary rates (conversion from mols to grams etc.) good volumetric technique (serial dilutions titrations etc.) and materials handling (powder handling quantitative transfer balance use etc.).
  • Experience with working in a lab and with analytical techniques and instruments (e.g. X-ray diffraction particle size distribution analysis tapped density measurement inorganic chemical analysis such as atomic absorption spectroscopy or inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy BET surface area analysis and electron microscopy)
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organisational skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams manage multiple priorities/projects and deliver accurate documentation
  • A figure-it-out solution driven mindset: fast flexible and focused under pressure.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with high temperature synthesis fabricating batteries/electrochemical devices or making thin film coatings.
  • Experience with large-scale pouch cells and cylindrical cells fabrication and testing.
