Job Description

Overview

The Intellectual Property Litigation Docketing Specialist will be a member of the Litigation Docketing Department and works under the supervision of the Litigation Docketing Manager. The IP Litigation Docketing Specialist will collaborate closely with attorneys and legal staff to provide thorough and accurate intellectual property litigation calendaring services for all federal state and agency matters including ITC. Responsibilities include reviewing court documents legal correspondence and case team requests and entering deadlines into the firms rules-based calendaring software CompuLaw Vision. The IP Litigation Docketing Specialist will follow all firm docketing procedures best practices and workflows. The IP Specialist will assist in the departments mission of delivering best in class service to clients and mitigating risk to the firm.

A Day in the Life

The responsibilities for this role include independently reviewing patent trademark trade secrets and copyright litigation court documents and legal correspondence and accurately entering deadlines into the firms rules-based calendaring software CompuLaw Vision. The candidate must ensure compliance with all department procedures best practices and workflows and respond to requests from attorneys and legal staff regarding deadlines and court rules. Conducting jurisdictional research and providing comprehensive summaries to case teams with oversight from the Senior Litigation Docketing Specialists and Manager as needed is essential. The candidate must ensure assigned calendaring is accurate and completed in a timely manner and provide back-up litigation docketing services for the Houston and Dallas centralized inboxes. Maintaining policies and protocols to ensure the accurate entry of deadlines and docket entries into CompuLaw Vision is required. The candidate will create and circulate reports to case teams for review and confirmation of deadlines quality review work product according to internal department procedures and escalate questions to senior docketing staff and the litigation docketing manager in a timely manner. Providing suggestions to the litigation docketing manager to assist with improving department procedures and workflow is also part of the role. Staying well informed of developments procedures and rules in the forums where the firm practices as well as general state and federal practices is necessary. Additionally the candidate will work on projects as needed.

We Know You

The ideal candidate will possess a degree from an accredited college or university a paralegal certificate or equivalent experience/education. A minimum of two years of intellectual property litigation docketing experience in a law firm setting is required. The candidate must have docketing experience in forums such as the International Trade Commission (ITC) federal district courts arbitration and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Strong attention to detail analytical and organizational skills and a strong work ethic with the ability to take direction without constant supervision are essential. Prior experience computing deadlines in both federal and state courts is required with experience in CompuLaw Vision preferred. Familiarity with rules-based calendaring software Milana is helpful. The candidate should have knowledge of nuanced intellectual property litigation rules including claim construction and Markman as well as the interplay between federal local and judges rules. Understanding the litigation lifecycle legal procedures terminology and court rules in both federal and state courts is necessary. The ability to define problems collect data establish facts draw valid conclusions and effectively summarize is crucial. Excellent communication and people skills along with a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy are required. The candidate must work well under pressure to meet strict deadlines and be highly adaptable to a fluid and ever-changing work environment. Being service-oriented and able to work collaboratively in a team setting is essential. Strong proficiency in MS Office is preferred and the ability to work overtime when required is necessary.
