Job Description

The Round Lake Area Park District has an opening for a Nature Program Coordinator. The coordinator plays a important role in connecting the community with the natural world. This part-time position is responsible for delivering engaging environmental education programs for all ages caring for live exhibit animals and facilitating outdoor recreation programs including paddling fishing and outdoor challenge course. This position also maintains a welcoming and informative atmosphere within the Prairie Grass Nature Museum and assists with special events and outreach programs.

Approximately 20-25 hours per week based on program enrollment. Flexible scheduling with collaboration with the Nature Museum Supervisor. This position participates in IMRF (Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund) and receives paid time off and holiday pay.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Environmental Education:
    • Develop and lead nature-based programs for schools camps community groups and the public.
    • Coordinate and deliver seasonal programs including hikes wildlife talks and nature crafts.
    • Assist in curriculum development and preparation of teaching materials.
    • Lead groups through Round Lake Area Park District challenge course
  • Animal Care:
    • Provide daily care for live animal exhibits including reptiles and amphibians.
    • Maintain clean and safe animal enclosures; monitor animal health and behavior.
    • Ensure compliance with all animal care standards and recordkeeping.
  • Museum Operations:
    • Greet and assist museum visitors; provide information on exhibits and programs.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of museum displays and interactive elements.
    • Assist with museum marketing and social media content related to exhibits and programming.
    • Organize and inventory educational supplies and equipment used for nature education paddling programs and museum classes.
  • Paddling & Fishing Programs:
    • Plan lead and supervise seasonal paddling programs including kayaking canoeing and paddleboarding.
    • Coordinate and lead fishing programs and clinics for various age groups.
    • Ensure safety during all water-based programs; maintain equipment in good condition.
  • Administrative & Team Duties:
    • Assist in training and supervision of part-time staff and volunteers.
    • Maintain accurate records of programs attendance and equipment use.
    • Participate in department meetings and special events as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Education Biology Parks and Recreation or a related field preferred.
  • At least 12 years of experience in environmental education animal care or related programming.
  • Experience with paddling instruction and water safety is strongly preferred.
  • Valid Illinois drivers license and ability to drive Park District vehicles.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed for programs and events.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 programs and other computer technologies

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong public speaking and teaching skills.
  • Knowledge of native Illinois flora and fauna.
  • Ability to safely handle and care for a variety of live animals.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with a passion for environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and perform physical work such as paddling and setting up event equipment.
  • Work is performed indoors in a museum setting and outdoors in natural and aquatic environments.
