Job Description

California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. JOB SUMMARY

Teaching Associate will teach one 3-unit section of English 1070A or English 1210.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Position involves preparing a syllabus and assignments creating lessons and class activities attending class weekly for the duration of the semester grading assignments holding weekly office hours and responding to student communication in a timely manner. Teaching Associates will also attend a pre-teaching orientation held before classes begin.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a student in the MA in English & Writing Studies program at CSUSB.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled in good standing as a classified graduate student in the M.A. in English & Writing Studies program.
  2. To teach Eng 1070A: First-Year Composition have completed the following prerequisite courses with a grade of B or better:

    - Eng 6120: Contemporary Discourse and Composition Theory
    - One praxis course chosen from: ENGor 6260
    - Eng 6620: An internship in a FYC course or writing-intensive course

  3. To teach Eng 1210: Diversity Literature and Social Justice have completed the following prerequisite courses with a grade of B or better:
  • At least one graduate literature seminar.
  • A praxis course preferably ENG 6590 Approaches to Teaching College-Level Literature. (Other praxis courses include ENG 6300 ENG 6570 ENG 6580 ENG 6600.)
  • Eng 6120: Contemporary Discourse and Composition Theory (because 1210 is a designated Writing Intensive course)
  • An internship (ENG 6620) in either a literature or a composition course

  1. Not have previously held a Teaching Associateship in the program.
  2. Maintain academic eligibility throughout the employment period (enrolled with 3.5 GPA or higher).
  3. Be available to teach courses at time assigned (MW or TR mornings or afternoons).
  4. Attend pre-teaching course planning sessions during the day the week before classes begin in Fall. Specific dates and times TBA.
  5. Accept responsibility and have the ability to relate well to others.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Following a conditional offer of employment a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with CSUSB. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment. Note: CSUSB cannot deny an applicant a position solely or in part due to a criminal conviction history until it has performed an individualized assessment and linked the relevant conviction history with specific job duties in the position being sought.

For this application you should provide a course overview/rationale and a skeleton syllabus:

a) An overview and rationale of your plan for Eng 1070A or Eng 1210 (3 pages) including key approaches goals sequences and scaffolding for the one-semester course. Your course rationale should explain your approach to the course discussing the types of assignments you would create your approaches to developing your students writing (e.g. invention activities processes approaches to feedback and revision); and the ways you would integrate readings into your course and support students critical reading development.

b) A skeleton syllabus of Eng 1070A or Eng 1210 including:

Please note: the purpose of this syllabus is to demonstrate your ability to develop a concrete theoretically grounded plan for a first-year writing class that addresses the learning outcomes of the CSUSB FYC program but will not be the syllabus you use should you be accepted into the TA program.

  1. Recommendations: two recommendations commenting on your academic strengths your ability to work with colleagues and potential as a writing teacher. If you have completed or are currently completing your internship one recommendation should be from your supervising faculty mentor. Recommenders should use the recommendation form on the TA website. Please send your references this link to the recommendation form when you send them your request for a recommendation.

Interview: In addition to these application materials TA applicants will meet with the TA Selection Committee via Zoom for 30-minute interviews to discuss their materials in more depth.
