Job Description

Ergon Inc. is seeking a full-time Incident Investigation Leader to join our Operational Excellence team. The Incident Investigation Leader will provide overall leadership professional knowledge and expertise for Ergons corporate-wide incident investigation and sharing initiatives. The position will be responsible for overseeing and standardizing the investigation of actual and potential incidents company-wide. This role ensures consistency in root cause analysis facilitates knowledge-sharing across facilities and drives corporate-wide improvements in operational excellence (OPEX). The individual will work closely with site leadership operations engineering maintenance and OPEX teams to enhance Ergons safety culture regulatory compliance and risk mitigation efforts.

Key Competencies:

  • Have a passion and drive to start new initiatives
  • Professional certifications (CSP CIH PE CCPSC or Six Sigma Black Belt) preferred
  • Training and Certification in RCA methodologies including Cause Mapping
  • Experience leading complex investigations and implementing enterprise-wide corrective action programs
  • Training in data and evidence collection techniques
  • Training in interview techniques and human factors
  • Understanding of petrochemical operations process hazards and high-risk scenarios
  • Proficiency in using investigation software data visualization tools and incident tracking systems
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills for executive and regulatory audiences
  • Ability to maintain a harmonious relationship with facility personnel
  • Provide a positive role model by performing tasks in line with Ergons Core Values
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities to achieve team goals

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering Safety or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in process safety incident investigation or risk management in the refining petrochemical or chemical industries.

Key Role/ Duties:

  • Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis (RCA):

Lead and oversee high-consequence incident investigations across the organization; standardize and implement investigation methodologies across the organization; ensure compliance with corporate policies and regulatory requirements and standards; provide guidance and support to site-level investigation teams to enhance the quality and consistency of root cause analyses; and develop and maintain a corporate-wide incident investigation database to track findings corrective actions and trends.

  • Process Safety Governance & Compliance:

Establish and maintain corporate standards for incident investigation procedures and reporting requirements; and conduct periodic assessments of incident investigations and corrective action implementation at company locations.

  • Data Analysis & Enterprise-Wide OPEX Improvements:

Analyze corporate-level incident trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify systemic risks and drive continuous improvement initiatives; integrate lessons learned from investigation findings into operational and capital planning processes; develop reports and presentations for executive leadership on safety performance lessons learned and strategic improvement plans; and benchmark company performance against industry best practices to drive safety leadership.

  • Leadership Training & Knowledge Sharing:

Develop and implement corporate training programs on incident investigation techniques root cause analysis and best practices; lead cross-functional teams and facilitate lessons-learned workshops to prevent the recurrence of significant process safety and other events; drive a corporate culture of process safety excellence through leadership coaching and proactive engagement with site personnel; and represent the company in industry forums conferences and regulatory discussions related to incident investigations.

Soft Skills:

Good verbal and written communication skills; excellent customer service; relatability; good planning and organizational skills; and a collaborative management style.
