Job Description

Senior Hazardous Materials Technician supports both campus research and health operations at UCSF and are responsible for managing hazardous medical radioactive and controlled substance waste receiving radioactive materials and controlled substances used in research and health care testing emergency showers and eyewashes certifying chemical fume hoods performing radiation surveys calibrating radiation survey meters and preparing and decontaminating patient rooms used for radiation therapies.

  • The position is part of Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) group within EH&S and reports to the HMM Operations Supervisor.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $33.80 - $40.70 (Hourly Rate).

  • At least 2 years of experience in an environmental health and safety program or related work experience managing hazardous medical or radioactive waste; or two years of college including appropriate science courses and one year of experience in an environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Knowledge of how to safely work with hazardous materials
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to use Excel Word and Outlook
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and the ability to wear appropriate personal protective clothing including a full-face respirator is required
  • This is a critical position; fingerprinting and a background check are required
  • Possession of a valid California Drivers license with a good driving record is required.
  • Incumbent is subject to DMV pull notice program.
  • Ability to work a swing shift
  • Ability to work during weekends and campus holidays as necessary to ensure coverage of EH&S activities
