Fred Hutch Cancer Center is seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) to lead and oversee the integration of information technology into the clinical and medical domains. Reporting directly to the CIO with a dotted line to the CMO the CMIO will work at the intersection of healthcare technology and clinical operations to drive the adoption and effective use of health IT solutions that improve patient care enhance clinical workflows and support the research mission of Fred Hutch.

The CMIO will collaborate with clinicians researchers IT teams and administrative leaders to define implement and optimize technology strategies that enable innovation and enhance the quality efficiency and safety of care delivery. This role is crucial in ensuring that the clinical and research teams have the tools they need to deliver high-quality patient-centered care while advancing medical research and improving operational effectiveness.

Responsibilities

Clinical Informatics Strategy and Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of the strategic vision for medical informatics ensuring alignment with Fred Hutchs overall clinical research and organizational goals.
  • Advocate for the use of health IT solutions to support clinical and research workflows improve patient care and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Guide the digital transformation of clinical and research environments ensuring that the clinical informatics strategy is forward-looking and leverages emerging technologies.

Collaboration with Clinical and Research Leadership

  • Work closely with clinical leaders medical staff and research teams to ensure that clinical informatics initiatives are aligned with the needs of providers and researchers.
  • Act as a liaison between IT and clinical departments translating clinical requirements into technology solutions and helping the IT department understand the operational challenges clinicians face.
  • Foster strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the organization to promote collaboration and the adoption of new digital tools and systems.

Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems and Health IT Solutions

  • Oversee the implementation optimization and ongoing management of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and other critical clinical systems to ensure they meet the needs of healthcare providers patients and researchers.
  • Ensure that EHR and other clinical systems are used effectively to support decision-making clinical workflows and patient outcomes including improving interoperability between various systems.
  • Lead efforts to improve the usability and functionality of clinical IT systems ensuring they enhance rather than disrupt clinical operations.

Clinical Decision Support (CDS) and Data Analytics

  • Lead the development and optimization of clinical decision support tools and other data-driven applications to improve patient care reduce clinical errors and enhance efficiency.
  • Work with data scientists and analytics teams to leverage health data for clinical insights predictive analytics and evidence-based practices that enhance patient care.
  • Ensure the integration of data from multiple clinical and research systems to improve outcomes and streamline workflows.

Regulatory Compliance and Data Security

  • Ensure all clinical IT systems are compliant with regulatory standards such as HIPAA FDA regulations and other healthcare compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT security teams to ensure the privacy and security of patient data as well as to address data governance and risk management concerns within clinical systems.
  • Oversee the development and enforcement of policies and practices to ensure clinical data is used ethically and in compliance with healthcare regulations.

Change Management and Training

  • Lead efforts to promote the adoption of new technologies and clinical informatics systems across the organization ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption to clinical workflows.
  • Develop and implement training programs for clinicians and staff to enhance their proficiency with clinical IT systems including EHRs clinical decision support tools and other technologies.
  • Provide leadership in managing resistance to change ensuring that staff understand the benefits of clinical informatics solutions and are equipped to use them effectively.

Innovation and Technology Integration

  • Explore and evaluate emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning (ML) telemedicine and other innovations to drive improvements in patient care clinical workflows and research.
  • Lead the integration of new technologies into clinical and research practices to foster innovation and enhance the delivery of care.
  • Work with the research community to identify opportunities for using informatics solutions to support translational research and personalized medicine.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead and manage a team of clinical informatics professionals including physicians informaticists and analysts to ensure the effective development implementation and support of clinical IT initiatives.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for the clinical informatics team fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Ensure that the team is aligned with the organizations goals and that they are equipped to handle the complex needs of Fred Hutchs clinical and research environments.

Budget and Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the budget for clinical informatics projects ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with Fred Hutchs strategic priorities.
  • Oversee resource allocation for clinical IT initiatives ensuring that projects are adequately staffed and that budget constraints are adhered to.
  • Monitor the performance of clinical informatics projects to ensure they meet timelines goals and budget constraints.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent)
  • 12 years of experience in clinical informatics with at least 5 years in a leadership or senior role.
  • Experience leading the implementation or optimization and management of Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and clinical IT solutions.
  • Experience in leading large-scale clinical IT and health informatics projects preferably in academic medical centers or research environments.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations and compliance standards (e.g. HIPAA FDA regulations).
  • A strong understanding of clinical workflows decision support tools data integration and analytics in a healthcare environment.
  • Previous experience working with clinical and research teams to translate clinical needs into technological solutions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree or certification in Health Informatics Clinical Informatics or a related field.
  • Prior CMIO or Associate/Deputy CMIO experience.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence change across an organization.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clinicians researchers IT teams and senior executives.
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical systems including EHRs clinical decision support and other healthcare IT solutions.
  • Experience with clinical data analysis predictive modeling and data-driven decision-making.
  • Knowledge of emerging healthcare technologies including AI telemedicine and machine learning and their potential applications in clinical and research settings.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to drive results and manage complex IT initiatives.Understanding of Oncology/Cancer care.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $266926 to $469394 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance. This position may be eligible for sign on bonus.
