Department Summary

The Computer Science Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon offers BS MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science as well as BS and MS degrees in Cybersecurity (as of Fall 2026). Instruction is provided by 18 tenure track faculty and 5 teaching professors. The department serves approximately 600 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors as well as offering a number of core education classes in the discipline. Our faculty research covers a wide range of areas in computer science including high-performance computing networks AI/machine learning data science and cybersecurity addressing problems from applied and theoretical perspectives.

The University of Oregon co-leads the Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity being created across the state and contributes a range of activities including workforce development and training related to Cybersecurity.

Position Summary

The Computer Science Department invites applications for an open-rank career instructional faculty position in Computer Science or Cybersecurity. Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding teaching at all undergraduate levels in Computer Science or Cybersecurity and have experience with curriculum development in one of these areas. Teaching responsibilities for career instructional faculty include courses throughout the Computer Science or Cybersecurity curriculum with a typical teaching load of six courses per academic year (two courses in each quarter term).

While career instructional faculty positions are not tenure track this position is intended to be ongoing with opportunities for growth and promotion. Career instructional faculty are valued members of the department who engage in curriculum design advising participate in department and UO committees and faculty governance. Career instructional faculty are eligible for sabbaticals.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications by rank (additional teaching experience does not guarantee appointment to a senior rank):

Assistant Teaching Professor:
Masters degree in Computer Science Cybersecurity or related field.

Associate Teaching Professor:
Masters degree in Computer Science Cybersecurity or related field.
Six years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor.

Teaching Professor:
Masters degree in Computer Science Cybersecurity or related field.
Twelve years of college-level teaching experience as a primary instructor.

Professional Competencies

Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
Excellent communication skills for effectively communicating complex computer science and cybersecurity concepts to diverse audiences.
Ability to collaborate with colleagues students industry partners stakeholders and community members to foster a cooperative and inclusive learning environment.
Ability to engage in outreach activities such as organizing workshops conferences or seminars and establishing connections that enhance the visibility and reputation of the center.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Computer Science Cybersecurity or related fields.
Experience teaching large courses.
Experience in curriculum development in Computer Science or Cybersecurity.
Experience in developing and teaching hands-on lab courses and experiential learning.
Relevant professional certifications for the Cybersecurity position such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
