QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and five years and increasingly responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy automotive and power driven equipment including diesel engines; A.S.E. certification or demonstrated progress toward obtaining certification; Kentucky School Bus Inspector certification; valid Class B Commercial Drivers License including passenger and air brake endorsement; Kentucky School Bus Driver Certificate; American Red Cross First Aid and CPR of Adult Infant and Child certification; a good driving record as evidenced by a five year driving record check; a good physical condition without limitations as evidenced by an annual or more school bus driver/DOT physical; federally required pre-employment and random drug testing.

PRIMARY JOB GOAL:
To perform mechanical repair work on school buses trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment; to perform body repairs gas or diesel engine overhauls transmission overhauls and electrical systems repairs as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines; knowledge of methods tools equipment and materials used in diagnosis repair and maintenance of motorized equipment; knowledge of shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance; knowledge of proper lifting techniques; knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures; ability to use services manuals; ability to perform mechanical repair work on school buses trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment; ability to analyze combustible engine failure; ability to pass required certification comprehension and aptitude exams; ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects; ability to operate shop equipment and tools including electronic testing equipment welders and lathes; ability to make major and minor repairs; ability to read and use mechanical diagrams repair manuals and parts catalogues; ability to maintain routine records; ability to plan and organize work; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to work cooperatively with others; ability to lift heavy objects; ability to observe legal and defensive driving practices; ability to work independently with little direction.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Disassembles motors and repairs adjusts and replaces parts; reconditions and adjusts ignition and carburetor systems; tunes engines including injectors and generators; repairs fits and adjusts valves pistons rings and bearings; cleans repairs and replaces carburetors fuel pumps fuel line gages and electrical wiring systems.
-Performs major mechanical repairs; overhauls transmissions differentials and universal joints; repairs adjusts and lines brakes; rebuilds and replaces air and hydraulic brake system components; performs front end alignment and repair.
-Performs mechanical work on school buses and other gas or diesel-powered automotive equipment; assures buses conform with established standards for passenger vehicles; completes related maintenance records.
-Inspects and diagnoses mechanical defects in school buses trucks automobiles vans tractors and other mechanical equipment; drives and tests school buses and provides emergency road service to disabled district school buses and vehicles as required.
-Reads and interprets schematics and diagrams; diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects in a variety of vehicles.
-Repairs and replaces alternators generators starters voltage regulators distributors and lighting systems; installs a variety of parts including batteries brakes glass and door handles.
-Grinds valves and performs welding; rebuilds equipment as needed.
rates a variety of equipment and machinery including electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment tire changers grinders steam cleaner hoist jacks torches and welding equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.
-Conducts periodic mechanical safety checks on buses as mandated by law; tests vehicles for compliance with exhaust emissions standards.
-Responds to service calls and performs emergency repairs as needed.
-Performs lubrication oil changes battery maintenance tire changes and servicing of equipment.
-Processes work orders and maintains records of time worked and materials used; recommends purchase of needed parts supplies and tools.
-Maintains work area equipment and tools in a safe clean and orderly condition.
-Monitors radio on all out-of-district trips made after or before regular hours.
-Performs related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Transportation Director and the Superintendent.
