POSITION SUMMARY:
The Elementary Associate Principal is an integral part of the schools leadership team working collaboratively with the principal counselors teachers media specialists and support staff. The Associate Principal is responsible for assisting in the administration of all aspects of the schools instructional and operational programs supporting the vision mission and strategic goals of Harrisonburg City Public Schools. This role includes supervision of staff development of instructional leadership promotion of a positive school climate and ensuring the safety and academic success of all students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess or qualify for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with Elementary School Principal or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 endorsement.
- Has a minimum of five years of successful high middle or elementary school teaching experience and a minimum of three years of successful experience as an assistant principal.
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
- Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks; models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences specifically racially ethnically and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices.
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office Google Suite email and information system applications.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers administrators and the community.
- Emotionally mature objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility work independently and maintain collaborative working relationships with students families administration co-workers and the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Effectively collaborates with the principal to administer the total school program including supervision evaluation and development of instructional staff.
- Assist with developing revising implementing and monitoring instructional programs and curriculum aligned with school division goals.
- Collaboratively prepare or supervise the preparation of reports records lists and all other required information and data with the principal.
- Collaboratively supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the academic progress and attendance of students.
- Effectively collaborate and coordinate with the central administrative staff on school needs problems and/or effectiveness.
- Effectively supervise and evaluate the performance of each member of the instructional staff using school board criteria/policies.
- Promote a safe and effective learning environment by addressing student behavior and supporting positive school climate initiatives.
- Coordinate and supervise designated school programs.
- Lead and participate in school improvement planning including the analysis of data to improve student achievement.
- Support the principal in preparing the schools budget and monitoring expenditures including maintaining and overseeing the various local funds generated by student activities.
- Supervise daily school operations in coordination with the principal; serve as acting principal in their absence.
- Support and enforce student discipline policies consistent with School Board regulations and student rights.
- Maintain high standards of professionalism; model ethical behavior personal integrity and respect for all individuals.
- Maintain records and prepare required reports; assist with school budgeting and resource management.
- Participate in division-level leadership activities and meetings.
- Uphold and model School Board policies the HCPS Strategic Plan and best practices in leadership and instruction.
- Perform other duties as determined with the Principa and/or assigned by the Chief Academic Officer or Superintendent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Light work lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students staff and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
