Job Description

Location: Amarillo TX
Job Title: INF Maintenance Garage Mechanic
Organization: North Zone Maintenance ()

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections overhauls and repairs automotive and engineering equipment including passenger-carrying vehicles light and heavy trucks trailers cranes road grading equipment tractors and other equipment with internal combustion engines.
  • Performs functions of the Garage Mechanic as discussed in the Specific Functions of this Job Description or as directed by Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) Supervision.
  • Uses operator hoists wrenches gauges cutting torches grinding wheels and other general or specialized machines gauges and tools.
  • Performs work requiring the reading of prints electrical diagrams and maintenance instructions applicable to the craft.
  • Ensures accurate and efficient replacement of parts and makes repairs and/or adjustments to equipment.
  • Performs duties under the direction of line management.
  • Maintains accurate records required during performance of job duties.
  • Adheres to Safety Fire and Security Regulations.
  • Ensures that all parts used are properly charged and that exchanged items are turned in to the storeroom or properly disposed of.
  • Responsible for safe operations and proper care of materials tools and equipment and the maintenance of good housekeeping in the Vehicle Maintenance Facility.
  • Ensures compliance to applicable Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal State DOE Corporate and Plant rules regulations Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 426.2) and Management.
  • Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls.
  • Understands a workers right to stop work when they feel their own or others personal safety is jeopardized.
  • Attends all required safety meetings and training. Offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment.

GASOLINE/LIGHT DIESEL MECHANIC:

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections overhauls and repairs automotive and engineering equipment powered by gasoline internal combustion engines and light diesel internal combustion engines. Overhauls and repairs include but are not limited to:
  • Rebuilding engines
  • Replacing brake pads and shoes
  • Resurfacing brake drums and rotors
  • Rebuilding carburetors
  • Replacing and adjusting clutches
  • Rebuilding turbochargers
  • Replacing diesel pumps and injectors
  • Adjusting valves and injectors
  • Repairing air compressors
  • Repairing air conditioning systems
  • Repairing differentials transmissions manual and/or power steering
  • Repairing electrical and electronic systems
  • Repairing drivability problems
  • Re-flashing electronic control units
  • Operates equipment such as engine analyzer scan tool digital multi-meter and generator/alternator/starter analyzer to repair and/or perform prescribed tests and evaluate the results against standards to determine necessary corrective action.

    Skills and Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be able to perform all duties and functions outlined above.
    • Must meet initial employment requirements.
    • Must be able to read write and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions.
    • Must be physically fit to perform the above functions as determined by Medical Evaluation.
    • Must have a valid State Motor Vehicle Operators License.
    • All qualifications work history training and education are to be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof. Ability to perform the functions and responsibilities involved will be determined by a comprehensive interview and background evaluation.

    Education

    GASOLINE/LIGHT DIESEL MECHANIC:

    • Four (4) years of recent experience satisfactory to line management in the automotive field as stated in the functions and responsibilities of this job description.

    DOE Order 429.2 Requirements

    In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e. 1 year maintenance-related experience or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2)

    Functional Requirements

    Lifting or carrying 40 lbs.
    Straight pulling or pushing 2 hours/day
    Reaching above shoulder level
    Repetitive motion of the wrist/forearm
    Walking 2 hours/day
    Standing 2 hours/day
    Repeated bending at the waist
    Repeated squatting
    Climbing with legs only (stairs)
    Climbing with arms and legs (ladders etc.)
    Operation of motorized vehicle:
    Normal far vision in at least one eye correctable to 20/40 20 feet
    Near vision (must be able to read computer screen manuscript book etc at approximately 13-16 inches from face)
    Depth perception (ability to tell how close or far an object is)
    Ability to distinguish basic colors (red green etc.)
    No evidence of current drug or alcohol abuse
    Ability to use small tools
    Ability to perform safety-sensitive duties

    Notes

    • Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
    • Requires Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification.
