Position: Maintenance Mechanic
Employer: Confidential Food Manufacturer (Irwindale area CA)
Department: Maintenance / Engineering
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor (or Engineering Manager-confirm)
Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Shift: 1st Shift (Mon Fri 6:00/7:00 AM 2:30/3:30 PM) OT as needed
Compensation: $28 $36 per hour DOE; OT per CA law

The Maintenance Mechanic ensures safe reliable operation of processing packaging and facility equipment in a fast-paced food manufacturing environment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repairing mechanical pneumatic hydraulic and basic electrical systems; executing preventive maintenance; supporting equipment installations/relocations; and collaborating with Production Quality and Engineering to reduce downtime.
B) Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesTroubleshoot & Repair
Diagnose failures on mixers blenders pumps conveyors fillers CIP/utility systems (air compressors chillers boilers etc.).
Perform basic electrical troubleshooting (motors drives sensors) within safety limits.
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
Complete PM tasks on schedule; document work parts and follow-ups in CMMS.
Inspect equipment for wear and recommend improvements or replacements.
Projects Installs & Facility Work
Assist in machinery installs relocations leveling and alignment.
Perform light fabrication/welding (if qualified) and general facility repairs (doors lighting piping).
Stage job kits (tools/parts) and coordinate with outside contractors as needed.
Safety & Compliance
Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) PPE GMP SQF OSHA and food safety guidelines.
Maintain orderly work areas; immediately address and report hazards.
Collaboration & Communication
Work independently and with cross-functional teams to prioritize repairs.
Provide clear shift hand-offs and update stakeholders on repair status and downtime impact.
Continuous Improvement
Identify recurring failure modes; participate in root-cause analysis and reliability improvements.
Support 5S/lean initiatives to improve uptime and reduce maintenance costs.
Required:
High school diploma or GED; technical/vocational training preferred.
7 years industrial maintenance in a manufacturing plant (food/beverage a plus).
Strong mechanical skill set: gearboxes bearings belts/chains hydraulics & pneumatics.
Basic electrical troubleshooting (motors sensors contactors VFDs); safe multimeter use.
Ability to read mechanical drawings electrical schematics and equipment manuals.
Experience with CMMS for PM scheduling and work order closeout.
Strong safety mindset-knowledge of LOTO OSHA GMP/SQF practices.
Ability to lift 50 lbs stand/walk for extended periods and work in hot/cold or wet/dry areas.
Preferred/Bonus:
Food manufacturing experience (GMP/SQF/FDA/USDA).
Welding/fabrication (MIG/TIG/Stick) or basic machining skills.
Forklift certification; rigging/hoisting experience.
Familiarity with PLC/VFD troubleshooting (not programming).
Exposure to 5S TPM or other continuous improvement frameworks.
Frequent standing walking bending kneeling reaching; occasional ladder/platform climbing.
Lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs (team-lift heavier items).
Exposure to moving machinery noise cleaning chemicals wet floors and temperature variations.
PPE required per task (safety glasses hearing protection gloves etc.).
