Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Children and Youth Worker is responsible for planning coordinating and facilitating the varied faith-based children and youth programs at the White Rock Church and Community Ministries. The Youth groups Sunday School Summer day camps and all other programming will run in accordance with the Salvation Army mission vision and values under the supervision of The White Rock Church Corps Officers. Coordinating volunteers providing discipleship through mentoring and leadership development will combine to give focused attention to strengthening and growing the programs that support the holistic development of children & youth including their spiritual formation.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Programming
- Provides spiritual and pastoral guidance to children and youth through mentorship fellowship discipleship and ongoing encouragement.
- Develops implements facilitates and evaluates ministries and programs relevant to youth (Grades 812) both within the church and in the wider community. This includes leading weekly Senior Youth Group gatherings focused on spiritual formation and fellowship.
- Oversees and coordinates programs for children including:
- Weekly XP3 Preteen Sunday School class (teaching or coordinating volunteers as needed).
- Junior Youth Group fellowship events hosted biweekly for ages 812.
- Coordinates and leads the annual Summer Day Camp serving as the primary liaison for student workers and volunteers. This includes overseeing the planning and execution of six weeks of programming such as Sumrner Day Camp Upward Soccer Camp and Vacation Bible School (VBS).
- Promotes the development of independent spiritual habits in children and youth (e.g. Bible reading prayer acts of service) through intentional mentorship and discipleship. As students grow helps foster transitions into young adult ministry opportunities.
- Partners with the Community Youth Outreach Coordinator to bridge connections between community youth and church-based programs such as youth groups Bible studies camping ministries and Divisional events.
- Facilitates the Red Cap Anger Management for Children and TASK Anger Skills for Teens programs in-person (e.g. in schools) or virtually (training provided). Acts as a backup support for community fairs school presentations and outreach events.
- Leads and supports church-wide seasonal and special programming including Messy Church Wild Church Children & Youth Sundays and the Annual Church Retreat while actively participating in staff and program team meetings.
- Actively engages in Divisional Youth events such as FUSE Weekend Youth Leaders Retreat camping ministries and Youth Department Lunch & Learn sessions.
- Coordinates and facilitates a weekly After-School Program that includes creative and skill-based activities such as Ukulele Club Painting Class and Dance Class designed to foster community build relationships and encourage personal expression among children and youth.
Volunteers
- Cultivates recruits trains supervises supports and develops volunteer leaders / mentors for this age group ensuring compliance with security procedures screening documentation and confidentiality.
- Deal with volunteer complaints and incident reports.
- Prepare post and maintain volunteer schedule ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions showing appreciation as needed.
- Ensure completion of police checks for volunteers statement of applicant for work with children and youth forms and online abuse prevention training
Administration
- Compiling statistics from events following department budget event and program planning social media promotion and facilitating registration for programs and collecting program fees
- Coordinating transportation set up and clean-up of activities and facility spaces as needed.
- Determine needed programming supplies and secure their provision based on attendance levels in the program and forecast ahead for growth planning for sustainability
- Provide occasional narrative and numerical data reports and present them to the corps officer for inclusion in annual impact statements in a timely accurate and organized manner.
Health and Safety
- Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Armys Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and working in compliance with the Health & Safety Act and Regulations reporting workplace hazards dangers injuries or illness work in a manner as required by the employer and report workplace injuries or illness.
Perform other job-related duties as required.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Governance Boards and Councils: None
Internal: Ministry unit staff and Officers
External: Community Service agencies schools families including parents & youth
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:
- Reports directly to the Corps Officers.
- Supervises volunteers and up to six summer students to support annual day camps (6 weeks)
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- May use funds to purchase supplies for program.
- Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources. (i.e. during Christmas Kettles Santa Shuffle).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a part -time position based on 25 hours per week.
- Working environment is typically in the office or on location at other community or school settings in generally agreeable conditions.
- The employee may come in contact with children and teenagers who may be neurodiverse emotional vulnerable angry or possibly violent.
- Flexibility regarding work hours including evenings and weekends.
- Travel is associated with this position for picking up supplies and community programs offsite 10% (Program van is available)
- This job requires the ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs. and reach bend stand sit and use a computer.
Regular hours of work: the hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements including weekday evenings and weekends; includes a %-hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year.
- Diploma or degree in Children & Youth studies or Religious/Biblical Studies or related field an asset.
- First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of one year of related experience working with youth and children particularly those with neurodiversity is required.
- Program facilitation and teaching skills including program planning public speaking and classroom or group management skills are required
- Experience working with youth and children particularly those with neurodiversity is required
- Experience working with the Orange curriculum or other faith-based curricula is an asset
- Proficient in working in a computerized environment; Microsoft Office (i.e. Word Excel and TEAMS) Canva ZOOM platform and social media experience required
- Training in crisis intervention conflict resolution and mental health first aid for those who work with youth would be an asset (training can be provided).
- Valid Drivers License Class 5 a current copy of the drivers abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required. Program vehicle is to be used for picking up supplies attending programs or transporting youth.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $22.92 to $28.64 with a maximum of $34.37.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
