Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Program Assistant Float at The Salvation Army Mountberry and Meadowlands Adult Day Services is responsible to the Program Services Manager or designate to provide high-quality compassionate personal care and program support to clients between both adult day service locations. This position ensures consistent staffing coverage by floating between locations and assisting in various capacities depending on daily program needs. Responsibilities include implementing care plans assisting with activities of daily living supporting recreation and therapeutic programs proving kitchen support and ensuring client safety and dignity.

This is a one-year contract position beginning August 25 2025 and ending August 21 2026. The work week is Monday to Friday 6 hours per day with one- half hour paid lunch break. Hours of work are from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and may vary to meet program requirements. Shifts may be scheduled at either program location.

The float role is vital to maintaining program continuity and client engagement. weekly schedules will be communicated in advance but flexibility is required as schedules and site assignments may change based on operational requirements.

Accountabilities:

Client services

  • Provide personal care in accordance with established care plans and policies within the scope of a PSW or SSW.
  • Support client activities social engagement and therapeutic goals through recreation and structured programs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care and client observations.
  • Respond to client needs promptly and with compassion.
  • Promote client-centered care and communicate changes in client status to appropriate staff.

Personal care & support

  • Support toileting hygiene and skin care based on individual needs.
  • Ensure timely documentation of personal care provided.
  • Follow assigned toileting schedules to promote dignity and prevent skin breakdown.
  • Assist during meals (e.g. cutting food opening packaging feeding when necessary) while respecting dietary restrictions.

Nutrition support

  • Record and report meal intake and related concerns.
  • Maintain safe respectful mealtime environments.
  • Assist with meal orders in line with clients dietary needs and preferences.
  • performs various tasks to support kitchen and dining room operations for meal service

Program delivery

  • Facilitate or assist with planned group and individual activities.
  • Prepare and tidy program environments supporting accessibility and engagement.
  • Support online and virtual program delivery as needed.
  • May be assigned administrative or coordination tasks such as intake incident reporting documentation and transportation scheduling.

Medication and safety

  • May be designated to administer medications with appropriate documentation and training.
  • Participate in maintaining a safe clean and supportive environment.
  • Complete incident and health & safety reports as required.

Leadership responsibilities

  • Actively promote teamwork and a positive workplace culture.
  • Support orientation and mentoring of new staff students and volunteers.
  • Maintain professional communication and respectful collaboration with all team members.

Financial & materials accountability

  • Ensure responsible use of supplies and program resources.
  • Receive and document payments or donations following salvation army protocols.

Human resources & training

  • Participate in performance reviews professional development and ongoing training.
  • Adhere to the employment standards act and human rights code as applicable.
  • Demonstrate understanding of and compliance with Salvation Army policies and procedures.

Working conditions

  • Full-time temporary role: 30 hours/week.
  • Standard work schedule: Monday to Friday 9:30 am 3:30 pm including a paid 30-minute lunch.
  • Weekly schedules provided in advance but subject to change based on program needs.
  • Will be required to work at both program locations.
  • Requires ability to lift/move 1019 kg and perform physical tasks including bending twisting and reaching.
  • Travel between program locations (<10%) may be required.

Qualifications

Education & certifications:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) or Social Service Worker (SSW) diploma required.
  • CPR & first aid certification (current).
  • Gentle persuasive approach (GPA.) certification.
  • Safe food handling certification.
  • Assets: Montessori for dementia care u-first training.

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with older adults and/or cognitively impaired populations.
  • Experience delivering recreational or therapeutic programs (e.g. art music fitness) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office and digital documentation platforms.

  • Demonstrated confidentiality problem-solving and time management abilities.

Additional requirements:

  • Clear vulnerable sector police check.
  • Screening through the salvation army abuse registry.
  • Understanding and support of The Salvation Armys Mission and Values.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Ontario class g drivers license may be required.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This is a part time position based on 30 hours per week.

Normal hours of work:

  • Five days per week 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
  • Includes a 1/2 hour paid meal break.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.
Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.
Education Qualifications and Certifications:
Completion of a formal post-secondary/college certificate program and/or specialized courses or certification in the field of personal or patient care.
Current First Aid/CPR certification
NVCI Certification
Experience and Knowledge:
Three (3) years of prior related experience in a social services setting is required.
Experience of working with senior population or in a geriatric facility will be considered as an asset.
Skills and Capabilities:
Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion respect and empathy in all interactions.
High standards of integrity judgment and confidentiality.
A valid drivers license and clear drivers abstract may be required for some roles.
Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required.
Knowledge of current quality improvement and risk management concepts and approaches with special emphasis on the prevention of falls and least restraint policies.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.83 to $27.29 with a maximum of $32.75.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
