Dean of Students - McGregor Intermediate School
THE CANTON CITY SCHOOLBOARD OF EDUCATION JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports to: Principal
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
Description: The Dean of Students will work closely with district and school leadership staff and students to maintain a positive and safe school environment.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance.
Essential Functions:
- Collaboratively work with school leadership and teachers to support the needs of students
- Collaborate with different departments
- Stay current on relevant student resources
- Monitor daily operation of the attendance office to include but not limited to: daily attendance tardiness truancy etc.
- Work with the truancy officer to identify students with attendance issues or disciplinary problems and collaborate with parents to create a positive outcome.
- Monitor interactions in hallways before and after school during class changes lunch and special events
- Manage the Positive Behavior Framework while helping to provide a positive learning environment
- Assist students through mental health issues and assign appropriate referrals if needed
- Notify parents and staff regarding disciplinary consequences for students in positive and informative communications
- Conduct home visits throughout the year as needed
- Assist school leadership to ensure consistent adherence and the implementation of the Student Code of Conduct
- Work with district and school leadership to develop implement and evaluate educational programs to enhance the school and promote learning and growth for students
- Provide programs and support for students
- Manage conflicts involving students and assist students in resolving those conflicts
- Work directly with the districts safety and security staff
- Work with counselors and teachers to develop strategic plan for student success as it relates to issues of discipline and relationships with students
- Assist with supervision of students
- Assist with drug/alcohol interventions
- Support staff by developing effective classroom management plans and classroom student behavior expectations
- Proactively evaluate the overall effectiveness of the Positive Behavior Framework and attendance programs being utilized
- Establish and ensure a safe orderly environment that promotes positive student behavior and that motivates students to excel academically
- Manage the documentation of student interventions/consequences through the student management system (eSchool)
- Attend appropriate meetings regarding student growth and success (IEP parent meetings expulsion hearings etc.)
- Work collaboratively with the Office of Student Family and Community Support
- Assist the Safety and Security Administrator in the maintenance of the crisis management plan and school safety requirements at the school level
- Maintain accurate student discipline records documenting all calls conferences office referrals consequences and behavior plans that have implemented
- Lead professional development aimed at strengthening relationships with students
- Train and support staff in the appropriate types of support needed to ensure that students can succeed in class despite behavioral or mental health concerns
- Update leadership and staff on trends developing in the student body that may negatively impact the overall safety and learning environment of the school
- Make provisions for being available to staff and parents for educational-related purposes outside the instruction day
- Maintain and improve professional competence
- Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
- Interact in a positive manner with staff students and parents
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance attitude and conversation
- Attend meetings and in-services as required
- Identify recruit and train individuals and organization members to act as volunteers for the school district
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
- Serve on committees and co-curricular activities as agreed upon
- Attend professional growth seminars workshops etc. to keep current on relevant issues
- Interact with other departments and school personnel when necessary
- Interact with public in official capacity when required
- Interact with Superintendent and/or Board of Education and present information as requested
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
Qualifications:
- Preferred Masters Degree
- Preferred Administrator License from the Ohio Department of Education
- Three to five years of leadership experience in a school setting demonstrating use and implementation of successful student behavior management strategies
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

- Knowledge of behavioral and social issues as related to students with learning and attention challenges
- State of Ohio policies and laws affecting the management of student behaviors

- Ability to provide leadership of behavior management and supervision
- Effectively facilitate the resolution of conflict
- Exhibit the ability to effectively relate to engage and communicate with a diverse group of students and their families in one-on-one small group and large group settings
- Skilled in Google
- Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- Effective active listening skills
- Organizational and problem solving skills
- Training in varied instructional design
- Training in computer technology
- Background/knowledge base in methodology and supervised practice
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Record keeping skills

- Occasional requirement to travel daily and overnight
- Occasional interaction among unruly children
- Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue

- Frequent operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions i.e. being prepared to come to work on all scheduled work days
- Weekend/evening/summer work
- Requirement to lift and/or carry up to a maximum of 50 pounds and push/pull up to a maximum of 100 pounds various supplies and/or equipment
