Job Description

SALARY: $22.48/per hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Operations & Maintenance Tech 1 in South Bends Public Works Department is responsible for a variety of entry-level tasks related to the operation and upkeep of water treatment facilities. This role involves performing manual skilled and semi-skilled labor to maintain pumping equipment and buildings as well as keeping precise daily records of chemical levels and plant status. Key duties include monitoring facility operations data assisting with the maintenance of water system equipment repairing or replacing damaged motors and pumps and maintaining grounds around well houses and pumping stations. The technician also performs maintenance on the SCADA system and handles the delivery of hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals. The Operations & Maintenance Tech 1 ensures the reliability and functionality of the water treatment infrastructure contributing to the delivery of safe drinking water to the community. By performing routine maintenance tasks monitoring chemical feeds and assisting with equipment repairs this position helps prevent disruptions and ensures continuous operation. The technicians role is essential for maintaining water quality and compliance with regulatory standards supporting the overall mission of providing high-quality water services to the residents of South Bend.

SCHEDULE: Varied schedule 7:00am-3:30PM; 7AM-7PM; 8PM-8AM. Schedule may change based on operational needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

Monitors and records facility operations data from Meters Totalizers Indicators and Analyzers Collecting water samples.

Assists with the operation and maintenance of a variety of water system equipment including valves chemical feeders pumps buildings and grounds.

Collects water samples.

Repairs or replaces damaged motors and pumps.

Cleans paints mops mows lawn shovels and maintains grounds around all well houses pumping stations filtration plants.

Maintains pumping operations to ensure chemical feeds are met as assigned.

Performs maintenance troubleshoots and repairs to S.C.A.D.A. system and components.

Maintains and repairs plumbing lines and fixtures including copper solder PVC socket and compression fittings.

Takes delivery of hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals at all stations.

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this position successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. High school diploma or GED; and an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge skills and abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties of the class.

Minimum 1-year experience in a maintenance and/or mechanical position.

Must be available to work overtime and standby when required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic principles and practices involved in water treatment distribution chemistry and math.

Knowledgeable and capable of servicing requirements for mechanical equipment.

Skilled in operation of various hand and power tools inspection of mechanical equipment performing general maintenance and communications sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive and follow work direction.

Ability to accurately read and record operations data understand laboratory analysis understand and follow oral and written instructions follow safety procedures establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.

Must demonstrate proficiency in the fields of general mechanical plumbing and electrical maintenance by passing an exam.

Must have the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and to use sound judgment in adverse working conditions.

The ability to perform accurate basic math computations is required.

CERTIFICATES LICENSE REGISTRATION:

Valid Drivers License and acceptable driving record. Required

High school diploma or GED; and equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge skills and abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties of the class. Required

Indiana Water Treatment 3 Certification required within 3 years of hire. Required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to climb sit walk and talk or hear. Occasionally the employee must use hands to handle or feel objects tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The role also involves occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors often in adverse weather conditions. Employees may need to climb structures or descend into vaults and will be exposed to chemicals such as chlorine hydrofluorosilicic acid and phosphate. Working at water treatment facilities can involve exposure to dirt noise hazardous materials confined spaces and adverse weather. Employees frequently work alone and may be assigned irregular shifts including nights and weekends and must be available for work assignments seven days a week. Individuals may also be exposed to moving mechanical parts electrical currents vibrations fumes poor ventilation chemicals noise and extreme temperatures.
