JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Requirements:
- A Masters degree from an accredited college or university.
- Licensure valid for service as a Teacher of Reading or English in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Licensure valid for service (or eligible to apply) as a Supervisor/Director in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- At least five years successful teaching or related experience.
- A strong background in ESL/ELL and in the secondary content area reading
- An understanding of performance standards and effective teaching practices which support the English Language Arts Massachusetts curriculum Frameworks and MCAS.
- Knowledge of human growth and development and its implications for teaching reading; first and second language acquisition and language literacy and linguistics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of reading theory and research their implementation and major educational trends; the design implementation and evaluation of developmental and remedial reading programs.
- Consulting skills are necessary for communicating effectively with members of the wider school community including those from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Working knowledge of various literacy assessment instruments.
- Ability to develop Reading/English Language Arts curriculum for students.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Demonstrated computer proficiency and knowledgeable in the application of educational technologies.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate the development implementation evaluation and revision of the approved K-12 Reading/English Language Arts Curriculum to affect an optimum learning climate.
- Assist building administrators in their development implementation supervision evaluation and upgrading of all aspects of Reading/English Language Arts instruction and curriculum for all educational programs at the school in accordance with the school districts policies and procedures.
- Assist in the ongoing professional development of effective teaching strategies and practices that support the Reading/English Language Arts Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and performance standards.
- Organize and lead committees/study groups in the ongoing effort to upgrade the Reading/English Language Arts curriculum.
- Work with the building administrators and teacher committees in organizing and coordinating the horizontal and vertical continuity of the Reading/English Language Arts instructional program throughout the district.
- Work with district and school staff to meet the needs of a diverse population of learners and to coordinate the development of the district success plans and individual student success plans.
- Observe teachers in their classrooms and offer insights into the enhancement of teaching/learning situations.
- Direct organize manage and assess school and district Reading/English Language Arts programs and meet with school-based personnel to interpret and implement the districts Reading/English Language Arts curriculum.
- Assume responsibility for reviewing and evaluating results of district-wide testing programs and for other evaluative measures of Reading/English Language Arts used in schools.
- Assist classroom and school-based Reading/English Language Arts curriculum support personnel in the development of instructionalstrategiestochallengeallstudents.
- Study evaluate and as appropriate recommend the adoption of new Reading/English Language Arts instructional materials methods and programs and assist in the budget preparation for newly approved instructional programs as related to instructional supplies equipment and materials.
- Provide models to facilitate lessons in the Reading/English Language Arts curriculum and encourage the development publication and use of new Reading/English Language Arts instructional materials by professional staff.
- Assume a leadership role in developing a curriculum for any Reading/English Language Arts course newly mandated by the legislature or School committee.
- Demonstrate the use of a variety of evaluation tools including required assessment instruments.
- Serves as a resource in the area of Reading/English Language Arts for teachers administrators and the community.
- Keep abreast of research and trends in Reading/English Language Arts instruction and curriculum and provide assistance in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the Reading/English Language Arts Program.
- Coordinate university-school partnerships with other educational agencies to promote the advancement of Reading/English Language Arts.
- Participate in the development implementation and evaluation of district and school improvement plans and initiatives.
- Assist in the development and implementation of state federal and private grant applications.
- Perform other Reading/English Language Arts instructional and curriculum duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Academics and Instruction.
