BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the worlds largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. WFP works to build the resilience of the most vulnerable by tackling the nexus between food and nutrition insecurity shocks and stressors and aggravating factors such as land degradation. In collaboration with governments and partners WFP works to protect rebuild strengthen and diversify livelihoods while simultaneously building the capacities of communities and governments to manage risks. Through Asset Creation & Livelihoods (ACL) programmes WFP provides individuals from vulnerable and food insecure households with food or cash-based transfers to help them better meet their households short-term food needs in exchange for their participation in asset creation activities that contribute to building long term food security and/or the restoration of community services.
The Asset Impact Monitoring from Space (AIMS) service in coordination between the GIS & Remote Sensing (GRS) Unit and Asset Creation & Livelihoods in the Climate and Resilience Service (ACL PPGR) uses satellite imagery and landscape monitoring techniques to evaluate WFPs ACL programmes. In particular the integration of satellite technology offers a solution to assess landscape changes derived from ACL interventions to help cope with a lack of timely long-term homogeneous and reliable ground information.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The consultant hired under these ToRs will be a technical member of the Geospatial Analysis Team of the APP Division. The consultant will report periodically on the progress of the required analytical work.
Support the AIMS Service map production create static and interactive GIS products in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
Support the maintenance of the AIMS Platform and report repository; and
Contribute to technical analyses analytical briefs and data management activities.
Support the development of analytical workflows for AIMS Landscape Impact Assessments.
Streamline existing workflows and develop new tailored processes ad hoc AIMS analysis.
Develop guidance and deliver training sessions to COs and RBs on the AIMS interactive platform.
Maintain storage and management of geospatial data and derived analytical products.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
Advanced University degree in physical geography biology physics or related field
Experience:
Experience in geospatial analysis geo-information management analysis and processing of VHR imagery
Good familiarity with FFA projects their types scope and expected outputs
Knowledge & Skills:
Expert knowledge of GIS software (ARC GIS Q-GIS) and analytical methodologies.
Good level of modern high-level programming languages / analytical systems in particular R and Python as applied to the processing of geophysical data.
Good presentation and team working skills with the ability to follow and develop a given scope of work.
Experience in early warning and remote sensing (interpretation and analysis) and familiarity with the specialty software applications associated with them.
Languages:
Strong written and oral English skills (proficiency/level C)
