Anticipated 9-12 ESL Teacher
DESCRIPTION:
EHS English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers are responsible for implementing research-based second language acquisition strategies to teach English Learners in grades 9-12. Teachers will utilize district curricula for standalone ESL classes that include common assessments. Teachers will be responsible for the progress monitoring of ELs and communicating with students families. ESL Teachers at Everett High School are responsible for attending weekly department meetings with the EL Department Head to examine formative assessments and collaborate with ESL teacher peers in addition to sheltered content teacher peers to increase EL participation and academic achievement. Teachers should be well-versed in the WIDA Frameworks Massachusetts State Standards and cultural responsiveness to promote equity and to differentiate for a diverse population of ELs including SLIFE and ELs with Disabilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors Degree in Education ESL and/or Applied Linguistics
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Certification as ESL Grades 5-12
- SEI Endorsement
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Masters Degree in Education and/or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
- 3 or more years of high school teaching experience
- Experience teaching Newcomer English Learners
- Dual Licensure in Special Education and/or Content Area
- Experience working in an urban public school setting
- Expertise with ESL and bilingual education teaching methodologies
- Proficiency in reading writing and speaking in another language in addition to English
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Plan and facilitate lessons aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Math ELA Social Studies and Science and district-provided HQIM curriculums.
- Incorporate language activities that align with the WIDA Standards into content instruction including listening speaking reading and writing to meet the needs of multilingual learners.
- Use the districts available technology and curricula to create engaging lessons and supports linked with 21st-century skills.
- Collaborate and co-plan with ESL teacher teammates as well as Special Education inclusion teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for English Learners.
- Manage classroom behavior with Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies that motivate students limit disruptions and create a sense of belonging.
- Creates and maintains a safe supportive and inclusive environment by establishing classroom routines and systems to support student learning.
- Incorporate social-emotional learning standards and curriculum that promote a sense of belonging inclusion self-confidence team-building and informed decision-making.
- Utilize inclusive practices and SEI strategies for multilingual learners.
- Collaborate with school adjustment and guidance counselors to support students social emotional and mental health needs.
- Collaborate with special education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are consistently and adequately delivered.
- Administer assessments and utilize available data to make instructional decisions that target students academic and linguistic needs including MCAS and ACCESS as well as other literacy formative and summative assessments.
- Collaborate and co-plan with Special Education and ESL teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for Special Education Students and English Learners.
- Proctor assessments for students on exams including MCAS and ACCESS.
- Assist in EL paperwork management and compliance measures set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Communicate with students families regularly using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations.
- To close opportunity gaps employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development relevant to urban educations challenges.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events as assigned by the school Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
Salary: Salary for this position will be based on the Everett Teachers Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
