ROLE SUMMARY:

School Health Assistant (SHA). This position reports to the building principal school site administrator or the school health manager and provides day-to-day support of students.Provides health and physical services to students; assists students in taking medications; performs a wide variety of first aid; record keeping and clerical duties



QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.Prior work experience working with ill injured or chronically ill children or adolescents in a school or other setting is preferred; personal care technician; or a similar profession


Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • Associates Degree or higher.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of the Parapro Assessment examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Must obtain an Educational Aide Permit with the ESEA Endorsment from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
  • Prior experience working with children desirable.


The successful candidate shall have the training skills and ability necessary to:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively problem solve and work independently.
  • Maintain student records related to immunizations chronic illness etc.
  • Administer medications document administration of medications and obtain/maintain consents for administration of medication.
  • Coordinate/provide vision dental hearing and BMI screening.
  • Document screening results and communicate failures to parents/guardians.
  • Document screening failure follow-up/closures.
  • Perform diabetes care which includes but is not limited to:
    • Checking blood glucose by finger stick
    • Calibrating & cleaning blood glucose monitor
    • Administering insulin per provider orders
    • Obtaining all necessary paperwork to provide care
    • Documenting care as directed by medical provider
  • Perform First Aid using the Emergency Guidelines for Schools published by Ohio Department of Health.
  • Accurately document student encounters and maintain documentation per guidelines.
  • Stock and maintain health room
  • Lifting of patient equipment or other items - up to 60 pounds independently up to 250 pounds with 1 or 2 person assist/hydraulic lift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Principal/Manager or his/her designee.

  • Use standard office equipment such as personal computers and copiers.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add subtract multiply and divide and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g. Word Excel).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.


Physical and Mental Demands Work Hazards

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.


EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS


Salary: $20.01 per hr. - per AFSCME contract
Service Period: School year only - 7 hours daily
