DEQ has an open opportunity for a Geologist/Hydrogeologist.

It is full-time (40 hours per week) withState Benefits


The Geologist/Hydrogeologist positionwill be responsible for analyzing and interpreting geological/hydrogeological data and processes concerning surface and groundwater resources and/or geotechnical subsurface evaluations for facilities located in the Winston-Salem Region. . The position will enforce applicable regulations and respond to public concerns and legislative mandates with regard to incident management permitting and disposal of coal combustion products in North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform reviews related to permit applications associated with Underground Injection Control wells monitoring wells sewer permitting wastewater surface application or other waste management systems.
  • Sampling of groundwater and soil to monitor the migration of contaminants.
  • Perform compliance inspections of permitted facilities and review monthly monitoring reports for permit compliance.
  • Review and approve plans and reports prepared for sites regulated under the Coal Ash Management Act (CAMA
  • Investigate citizen complaints respond to emergency incidents such as fish kills and spills and develop enforcement documents and actions as necessary.
The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolinas drinking surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes streams rivers wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance investigations regulatory compliance and enforcement monitoring and field assessments certifications laboratory analysis and testing planning water quality standards management educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Groundwater Resources and Water Planning. Learn more by visiting

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in geology geosciences physical science or a related field or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
