Job Description

Position Overview

The City of Canby Police Department is seeking to hire and establish an eligibility list of entry level and lateral Police Officers to fill current and future full-time positions.


Certified Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work including discovery investigation report preparation and patrol to enforce federal state and local laws. The Canby Police Department includes 30 sworn positions including a Chief and two Captains. Officers have the opportunity to work in a variety of specialized units or specialized teams.


This is a full time non-exempt position represented by theCanby Police Association. The City provides an excellent benefit and compensation package including PERS and a matching contribution of up to two percent of the employees pay for deferred compensation (457 Plan). The City also offers a variety of additional compensation opportunities for Police Officers such as Intermediate and Advanced Certificate Pay and Specialty Assignment Pay. The City offers a 5% pay incentive for written and oral proficiency in the Spanish language or any other language if spoken by over 10% of the total Canby population.


Lateral Level Requirements:
Currently certified (or eligible to be certified upon hire) with Oregon State DPSST as a Police Officer and in good standing with their current and/ or previous department. Out of state- Certified as a Police Officer and in good standing with their department. Must have completed an equivalent police academy to the state of Oregon DPSST. Have completed a Field Training Program and off probation. Military Police Federal Law Enforcement Corrections and Parole/ProbationDO NOT QUALIFY as a Lateral Police Officer.

Entry Level Application and Examination Process:
Interested individuals must complete and pass therequired Frontline National Test with the National Testing Network (NTN) AND submit a City of Canby employment applicationby the closing date of June 23 2025. Canby Police requires a score of 70% or higher in reading writing and Frontline National Video assessment to be considered for a position.To schedule a test go to select Law Enforcement and sign up for the Canby Police Department.Additionally ORPAT scores will need to be submitted prior to the closing date.If you do not have current ORPAT scores and need to complete testing please contact Chief Jorge Tro
to schedule. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

What to expect at the
website:Upon completion of the entry level exam and ORPAT testing all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the Canby Police Department. Top Candidates who attain a passing score on both the entry level exam and the physical abilities (ORPAT) test will be invited to continue in other stages of the departments selection process.

National Testing Network does not replace the Canby Police Departments responsibility and decision making in the testing process. All candidate results are provided to the Canby Police Department where the final decisions are made.

  • May provide informal training/instruction to volunteers and new employees.

The individual in this position is expected to possess or acquire:

  • Thorough knowledge of police practices and procedures investigative methods and techniques federal state and local laws report writing firearm use and safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand complex oral and written instructions and act upon them accordingly; speak and write clearly and effectively prepare clear comprehensive objective reports; operate assigned equipment and vehicles skillfully and safely; analyze situations and problems quickly and objectively to determine course of action.
  • Must be of good moral fitness (moral character) and understand that any acts that reflect dishonesty deceit or misrepresentation adversely reflects on their fitness to perform their duties as a police officer.

  • Previous college-level training or additional experience in law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of the community and surrounding area.
  • Related training e.g. first aid CPR hazardous materials firearms training LEDS general level certification etc.
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish.

Physical effort
  • High: While performing the duties of this position the employee is frequently required to sit stand communicate reach and manipulate objects tools or controls. The position requires mobility and the ability to operate a motorized vehicle including a police motorcycle if assigned to the Traffic Team. Duties involve moving or wearing materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis; however may be required to move adults weighing up to 200 pounds on an infrequent basis. Equipment worn typically weighs in excess of 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard motorized vehicle firearms etc. Position may be required to deal with violent and combative individuals requiring considerable physical effort.

Work environment
  • Extreme Risks/Discomforts: Work locations are in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. Contact with individuals who may become violent combative under the influence of drugs/alcohol mentally ill or who have communicable diseases.

Travel requirements

Requires frequent local travel.

Hours required

Position is subject to 24-hour emergency call-back. Must be available for rotating shifts including weekend and holiday assignments.

Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check and reference checks as part of the contingent employment offer process. Certain positions at the City of Canby will also require a drug screen.

Within three days of hire you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Securitys I-9 verification process confirming authorization to work in the United States.
