The Maine Forest Service Forest Health and Monitoring (FHM) Division is seeking to fill a 35-week seasonal Conservation Aide position in the Portland/Southern Maine area. The actual location is flexible.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The position will perform outdoor tasks related to field data collection on an annualized forest inventory survey. Work will include measuring and recording a variety of data on forested and non-forest inventory plots. Work is performed under immediate supervision.

The following tasks are typical duties of this position:

  • Measure and record a variety of data on forested and non-forested inventory plots in a confidential manner to be entered into a statistical database. Specific plot locations ownership and land activity information will not be shared with any other party/individual.
  • Perform field work under a variety of adverse conditions including rain snow heat and cold.
  • Walk several miles per day when required over varied terrain with up to a 35 lbs. backpack containing all the necessary data collecting equipment.
  • Travel and stay overnight a week at a time anywhere in the State. This type of travel will likely average 8 times during the field season.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and/or experience in conservation work and/or a high school diploma or equivalent.

Preference will be given to those withone (1) year of training and/or experience in a natural resource-related field. A year of High School coursework related to this field will be accepted as one year of training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Within the first twelve months of employment the selected candidate must receive training in forest inventory/health field procedures for collecting data and must take and pass a written and practical field test meeting quality control and assurance standards to become certified by the US Forest Service.

Candidate must possess or be able to obtain a valid Maine Drivers License.
