Job Description

Location: Village Market
Hours: Part-Time Hourly
Pay: $17.68 - $23.99

Job Function:
To assist upper store management with tasks involving ordering merchandising receiving and other required tasks to achieve department financial goals; to receive and check-off deliveries; to be the primary employee to effectively front/block assigned areas in the store on a daily basis build and stock displays when needed and stock merchandise; to effectively and efficiently run a cash register when assigned as a backup cashier; after enough training and store knowledge to order from various vendors in the absence of the assistant store manager and the store manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
General
  1. Observe and enforce all store rules and university policies;
  2. Maintain a neat well-groomed personal appearance at all times and enforce store dress code;
  3. Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by store management;
  4. Be able to multi-task well especially in fast-paced environments/situations;
  5. Adhere to all local state and federal health and civil code regulations throughout the store;
  6. Assist with receiving deliveries when assigned;
  7. Handle damaged merchandise according to company policy;
  8. Professionally handle customer complaints and provide them with satisfaction when possible;
  9. Ensure favorable store image to customers by fronting blocking and maintaining a clean attractive store;
  10. Maintain good communications with all employees throughout the store;
  11. Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service;
  12. Perform other duties and assignments as directed.
Purchasing and Sourcing
  1. When store management believes enough training and general store knowledge has been obtained the procurement and merchandising manager will when assigned assist with the ordering from various vendors to help keep supplies at sufficient levels;
Bookkeeping
  1. Maintain safeguard and forward all department-related accounting reports and documents to each respective department head as well as the store manager when needed according to company policies and procedures;
  2. When assigned review and commit invoices credit memos and inventory adjustment documents to confirm accuracy of item descriptions sizes quantities and margins.
Merchandising
  1. Be the primary employee to professionally front and/or block merchandise from the Grocery Natural Foods Meat Substitutes and General Merchandise departments;
  2. Keep merchandise rotated in accordance with store policy and product code dates and to pull all out-of-date merchandise and to inform and/or assist the other department heads of any situations within their respective departments that need attention;
  3. Assist with backstocking product when assigned.
Maintenance and Safety
  1. Correctly fill-out accident forms for staff students and customers when needed;
  2. Keep watch of refrigeration equipment for proper performance and inform management of any breakage or concerns;
Security
  1. Ensure that receiving policies and procedures are complied with to protect store assets;
  2. Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer actions and behavior;
  3. Notify management or security and call attention to any abnormal behavior noted;
  4. Maintain effective security standards and procedures for all areas within the store.
Personnel
  1. Maintain high standards of employee morale and promote an atmosphere of cooperation.
Requirements and Conditions (Essential Functions):
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform all of the duties described in the preceding in an efficient and competent manner. The requirements and conditions listed below are representative of the minimum levels of knowledge skill experience and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:
  1. Minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma or GED. A college background
    is preferred;
  2. Minimum 1 year of retail experience specifically with merchandising and/or inventory management.
Mathematical Skills:
  1. Must possess the math skills necessary to verify vendor invoice charges and counts calculate gross margins percentages and losses analyze inventory reports.
Language Skills:
  1. Ability to hear speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance to answer telephones and to be able to communicate effectively with customers department employees the stores co-workers visitors and sales representatives;
  2. Ability to read write analyze interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to:
  1. read and understand company handbooks policies and procedures;
  2. be able to compose and write information notices or bulletins to staff;
  3. read and understand other written job-related documents including postings on company bulletin boards;
  4. Ability to compose and write reports and business correspondence including effective departmental memos employee corrective action notices and postings.
Reasoning Ability:
  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist;
  2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram oral schedule or written form.
Other Skills or Requirements:
  1. Must be able to quickly learn and follow the operations and nature of all departmental duties;
  2. Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity accuracy cleanliness harmony and safety established in the store;
  3. Proficient computer skills are desired including but not limited to; Microsoft Windows operating systems Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook etc.) internet browsers (Chrome Edge etc.);
  4. Must be able to count change quickly and efficiently and have the confidence to be able to quickly and effectively learn the in-house point-of-sale system (both the back-end and cashier terminals).
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities:
  1. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50lbs with relative ease;
  2. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk and use the hands to handle finger or feel objects tools or controls sitting will be minimal;
  3. The employee must frequently walk talk or hear and reach with the hands and arms and occasionally the employee must crouch or kneel;
  4. Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including sufficient visual acuity to check accounting reports invoices contracts and other written documents;
  5. Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items for customers located above freezer cases or from stockrooms and other storage areas;
  6. Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of containers having liquid contents) shoplifting and other security assistance requests customer accidents etc;
  7. Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for volume productivity accuracy cleanliness harmony safety and profitability established by the employer;

Work Environment:
The work environment conditions described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. It may possible to modify some circumstances to accommodate individuals with disabilities;
  1. The work environment includes occasional exposure to in or around refrigerated storage areas and relatively damp and humid conditions;
  2. Typically the noise level in the work environment is moderate however on occasion it can be somewhat noisy when power tools and equipment are in use or when duties require a temporary presence in the compressor area;
  3. Access to break areas storage areas offices and employee restrooms requires ascending and descending a flight of stairs.
Special Requirement:
Must have a strongly expressed commitment to Jesus Christ; the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.
