Collect samples for analysis prepare glassware and equipment for laboratory analysis.
Receive samples and follow chain of custody procedures.
Prepare Industrial and Wastewater samples for analysis.
Learn to perform basic laboratory analysis such as pH Settleable Solids Total Suspended Solids Percent Solids Electrical Conductivity and Biochemical Oxygen Demand .
Clean sample containers glassware fixtures and laboratory equipment.
Prepare media and reagents.
Follow laboratory safety rules quality control and assurance procedures.
And other duties as needed.
Prepare clear and concise logs for sample receiving and quality assurance requirements.
Maintain accurate and complete records on laboratory analysis.
Ability to learn basic laboratory technique and laboratory safety procedures.
Ability to learn quality assurance procedures.
Ability to perform basic laboratory calculations.
Establish and maintain excellent customer service skills with internal and external customers.
Education:
Equivalent to a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate. Course work in Mathematics Chemistry and/or Biology highly desirable. High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate must be provided at time of application.
License:
Possession of valid California Drivers License at the time of employment to be maintained as condition of continued employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Maintain the following physical abilities: See well enough to read fine print computer screens and analytical equipment; hear well enough to receive and understand instructions converse on the telephone and in person; use of hands and fingers for use sensitive analytical equipment computer keyboard filing writing and answering telephones; ability to differentiate odors; capable of clear speech; bodily mobility to stand for extended periods stoop bend as needed; able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
SELECTION PROCESS:
1. Applicants must complete a standard City of Turlock application employment form.
2. You may submit your required documentation using the following options.
Applications will be rejected if they incomplete or required documentation is not attached.
3. Applications will be reviewed for possession of the minimum job requirements. In the event that a large number of applicants possess the minimum qualifications applicants who appear to be the most qualified based on their breadth and recency of relevant experience will be invited to compete in the testing process.
4. Candidates invited to compete in the testing process may be required to take a written examination which is based on a pass/ fail basis. In the event that a large number of candidates pass the written examination the City reserves the right to invite a percentage of the top scoring candidates to compete in the next test phase of the testing process an oral examination.The oral exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 30 2025.
5. Candidates who participate in the oral examination and receive a score of 70% or more will be placed on an eligibility list. Ranking on the eligibility list is based solely on the results of the oral exam.
6. Completion of a practical exercise may be conducted in order to further evaluate skills relating to essential job functions.
7. Top candidates from the eligibility list will be referred to the Municipal Services Director for final appointment consideration.
8. Final appointment will be contingent upon passing the following: reference review a drug screening and fingerprinting.
VETERANS PREFERENCE SYSTEM
The City of Turlock has adopted a veterans preference system (effective January 1 2002). The percentage score achieved through an entrance (non-promotional) examination which ranks applicants on an eligibility list shall be adjusted to provide: (a) one (1) percentage point added to the final test score for each six (6) months of active service during a time of armed conflict up to a maximum of five (5) points and (b) five (5) percentage points added to the final test score for veterans who are disabled as a result of active military service during a time of armed conflict regardless of length of service. To receive preference points applicants must provide supporting documentation and proof of honorable discharge. In no event shall an applicant receive more than a five (5) point adjustment. This request should be made in section #12 of the employment application form. A copy of your DD214 must be attached for this request to be considered.

DRUG SCREENING/FINGERPRINTING
The incumbent will be required to take a drug screening and be fingerprinted.

BENEFITS
Sick Leave: The City of Turlock amended a Paid Sick Leave Policy on December 23 2023. An employee who on or after July 1 2015 works for 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment is entitled to paid sick leave. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked. Accrual shall begin on the first day of employment or July 1 2015 whichever is later. Paid sick leave shall carry over to the following year of employment and is capped at 80 hours or ten days.
HOURLY RATE OF PAY:$16.50 - $23.00 per hour
HOURS OF WORK: Hours and days may vary. This position shall not exceed twenty (20) hours per week or 960 hours per fiscal year.
