University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems has an opportunity to join our team as a Network Architect! The Network Architect position has extensive knowledge in their subject area including a minimum of 5-7 years at the senior level in their field. Duties include troubleshooting maintaining and building Cisco enterprise-class networks designing and presenting complex technical topics to team members and others in and outside of HCIS. Individuals need to possess strong analytical and communication skills the ability to collaborate and drive tasks forward with multiple technical teams and handle on-demand troubleshooting with critical hospital networking devices. At this level it is also required to serve as a lead network engineer for various capital projects including new hospital buildings and large renovations. Project tasks include strong knowledge of all network team services.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead network architecture design implementation and maintenance of campus networks to meet institutional requirements and standards.
- Configure maintain install and troubleshoot edge switch gear and core and border routing equipment.
- Evaluate and recommend hardware and software solutions.
- Interact with peer institutions to discuss technologically current or emerging network solutions and best practices.
- Troubleshoot complex network related problems that have a significant impact; Escalate service outages as appropriate to IT management.
- Create custom applications using programming and scripting languages to resolve both tactical and strategic problems.
- Configure maintain install and troubleshoot regional optical transport equipment.
- Create maintain and review all network documentation.
- Review and validate network vendor support contract information.
- Create review and submit network standards procedures and policies for IT Management and institutional approval.
- Assist IT groups on campus to understand and document network behavior for specific applications.
- Present to large campus-wide and/or public audiences.
- Discuss network requests and facilitate network requirement definitions with customers.
- Lead discussions with current and potential vendors.
- Function as technical expert and/or project lead for network services projects.
- Develop models and procedures for installation and support of networking services.
- Represent the University of Iowa in pertinent local state regional and national contexts and relationships.
- May hire develop and manage the performance of staff; assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.
- Assist in budget development and provide projections and recommendations.
- Occasional travel in eastern Iowa.

Education Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering of Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and related experience (typically 10 years)
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in; Knowledge of concepts technologies philosophies and tools for the design of organizations network infrastructure and services.
- Knowledge and ability to design implement and support data networks hardware facilities and software
- Advises others in resolving complex multi-component failures.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively with a population of technical and non-technical individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and independently.
- A valid drivers license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards is required
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of a variety of telecommunications software and associated platforms and protocols.
- Knowledge of a variety of technologies for Remote Site transmission of voice data fax video or navigational information.
- Knowledge of a variety of Campus networks protocols
- Knowledge of and experience with configuration and maintenance of BGP OSPF STP HSRP QoS 802.1q 802.1x QoS MPLS DNS DHCP multicast Syslog.
- Knowledge of various Cisco hardware families including 8k ISR 9k switching 9k Wi-Fi
